This week we commemorated Patriot Day by learning a bit about the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Our class, along with many others from Page, participated in a Stair Climb to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives heroically going into the buildings to rescue people on this day. Our goal was to climb as many stairs as we could, up to 2,200 (the total amount in the World Trade Center towers). Each student held a picture of a fallen firefighter to honor and reflect upon their sacrifice. Thank you to all of our first responders who risk their lives to help others on a daily basis. We honor and commend your heroism! Click here for pictures from the Stair Climb.

Thank you to everyone who has already contributed supplies to our classroom! I could still use some more of the following items:
Post It notes- regular 3x3 name brand please! We use these to answer our "Question of the Day" and they need to stick to the wall. Other brands always fall off.
Pencil top erasers - Just basic ones like these You can often find them at the dollar store.

This week was our first "Fun Friday". Students earn Fun Friday by completing all of their classwork AND homework for the week. Our class combines with Mrs. Potter's and Mrs. Meredith's classes, and students spend Fun Friday playing card games with their peers. Students who have missing work and do not earn Fun Friday spend time working on their missing assignments.
Please help your child establish homework routines at home. Set aside a time and space for them to do their homework. Make reading a family activity rather than a chore. Read TO your child or have a family reading time when everyone in your house stops to enjoy reading their own book.
Congratulations to Aila and SkyLynn who were voted as our class Student Council representatives.
If you have not already sent in payment for the Art Prize field trip, student payment is due Monday, September 22nd!
Click here for a digital copy of the Art Prize information that was sent home.
Save the date for this year's Walkathon on Friday, October 3 at the TKHS stadium. Parents are welcome to join us to walk with their child. 4th graders will walk from 2:30-3:00pm and then they may be signed out from the track to leave with their parents. Walkathon donations are due October 2. Please return the envelope even if donations were collected online. There is a spot on the back to track donations so PTO knows which prizes to award your child.
Please see the attached flyer for information about an assembly that is coming to our school on Wednesdya, September 17th. Your child will have the option to purchase a yo-yo after the assembly. A hard copy of the flyer went home with your child on Friday as well.
Our first math test will be on Wednesday! Students will take a Practice Test in class Monday, check their answers, and bring this home to review and study.
We began our first 2-week cycle of language arts instruction. Here are the skills we are working on:
Essential Question: How do people respond to natural disasters?
Reading Strategy: Reread
Reading Skills: Compare & Contrast Text Structure, Read Diagrams & Headings
Vocabulary Skill: Multiple Meaning Words
We will take a test over these skills in class next Friday. These tests are designed for Progress Monitoring, so there is no need to study at home.
This week we explored volcanoes. Students learned that different types of lava form different shape volcanoes (cone vs. shield) and cause different types of eruptions (gentle vs. explosive).
Check out these photos from our morning "Soft Starts" time.
