Information About the Treaty

As you are researching I want you to think about a person who may have been around at the time of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It may be an actual person in history or someone you make up that fits a type of person who may have been around then.

Here are some questions to think about as you are researching.

What was New Zealand like then in the 1830's-40's? (Population? Settlements? Food? Supplies?) Has NZ changed for this person?

What sort of activities would this person be doing?

How would the treaty have affected them? How would it improve things for them/be a disadvantage for them.

Who were the main people involved in the treaty? What were their roles? What would your character think of them?

What trade was going on between Maori and Pakeha?
