This lesson focuses on one group of learners. While this recording is taking place, the other learners in my class are completing a range of independent activities to support their learning. Today, these activities include:
Interacting with texts and activities using the Sunshine Classics
Completing Explain Everything activities as a follow up to their guided reading lessons (refer my reading planning for each group here)
Listening to read-aloud stories to increase their "reading to" mileage
Spelling test or blend activity created using Explain Everything and available via my class site here
Reflection
Learners were very aware of the camera and some were reluctant to speak up during our discussion. As the camera becomes more routine I feel they will be more relaxed and willing to contribute. At this stage of the year, the discussions are extremely 'teacher led' with me seeking to draw out longer responses from the learners. Ideally, as the year progresses, learners will volunteer more information and be able to contrast their opinions and justify their reasons in more in depth ways.
I felt that some of the learners didn't draw on the discussions we had when they answered the questions in their activity and I need to clearly scaffold this with them so they think about and include the ideas we discussed in order for their answers to be more complex.
I was happy with the learners understanding of compound words, assisted by some of these learners having encountered these last year.
