LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE
WALT (We are learning to): Use place value to add tens and hundreds
Other learners in the class were working independently on Study Ladder and maths practice tests which I created (addition, subtraction
and times tables) which are available here.

Teacher Notes/Planning
Ascertain which learners can read numbers over 100. Start lesson by reading 3 digit numbers - use of whiteboard to write a number & have each learner read the number.
If secure, move onto adding tens and hundreds. Start with 3 + 4 = 7. This group are not totally secure in their basic facts to 10 - remind of adding on from biggest number. Move onto 30 + 40 = then onto 300 + 400 = What do you notice about this? Therefore, if 2 + 6 = 8 what does 20 + 60= and what does 200+600=
Reflection
This was the first numeracy lesson of the term and it was noticeable that the recall of basic facts is not strong with this group which does impede their ability to quickly move through the activity. Importantly, they did seem to confidently grasp the strategy and could see the pattern that was developing. All learners contributed through the session and I was able to question each learner and ascertain their level of understanding. All learners were able to read three digit numbers confidently, something we had worked on last term. Completion of the follow up activity took longer than expected due to the speed to adding facts to ten, however all successfully completed this. Further work on place value & continued practice of basic facts definitely needed with this group.
