Lesson 4

LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE

WALT (We are learning to): Use multiple sources to answer questions I have and retell main events from our story

Teacher Notes/Planning

Before reading - use a Google Document to discuss what learners know about tigers already. What questions do learners have about tigers?

Text specific vocabulary jungle; - Words in Te Reo - morena, tamariki ma,

We are learning to retell our story in our own words - specific scaffolding on retell - what are the main events from the story and what order did they happen in?Comprehension questions - what did Thomas usually do when it was news time at school? What did Thomas say he had at home? Who caught the tiger? What do they feed the tiger? Why didn't Thomas bring the Tiger to school? Why did Thomas say he had a new kitten? Where do you think the kitten came from?

Full expanded plan available here

Other learners in my class are completing a range of independent activities to support their learning. The activities included:

Interacting with texts and activities using the Sunshine Classics

Completing Explain Everything activities and a subsequent blog post as a follow up to their guided reading lessons (refer my reading planning for each group here)

Listening to read-aloud stories to increase their "reading to" mileage

Spelling test or blend activities created using Explain Everything and available via my class site here

Reflection

One learner was absent today, resulting in a group of four learners only. While the audio did a better job of picking up audio for most learners, Patience (sitting on the right of the video) was extremely hard to hear. This is the first time I've used a Google Doc to capture the learners ideas prior to reading as I felt it provided an opportunity for them to revisit their questions after the reading. For this session (to save time) I opted to type the questions into the Google Doc although in future lessons learners could collaborate in this Doc together and add their own ideas, possibly even before they see me for their reading lesson? I'm pleased that I am seeing definite improvement with retell with this group but will continue working on this skill next term. The learners really enjoy creating the videos as a part of their reading follow up and the plan is to introduce iMovie editing next term as a way of them making the videos more watchable. Its interesting to note that some of them recorded their video while other learners were around and this can be heard in their background - another area for learning for them.
