Teacher Notes/Planning

Warm Up activity - what makes ten using playing cards Small group lesson - use place value houses and tens/ones blocks. Unpack the place value house. Have learners place 7 'ones' blocks in the place value house. Where do they go? Have learners take another 5 'ones' block and place them underneath the house. If we already have 7, what do we need to make 10? Learners to identify and move this many blocks into the ones column. Introduce the bank - who can trade 10 'ones' blocks for a ten block? Where would this ten block go?

Other learners in the class were working independently on Study Ladder and maths practice tests which I created (addition, subtraction

and times tables) which are available here.

Reflection

The warm up activity was very well received (have done this several times since this recording) - learners are keen for the competition element and even though it seemed some learners did better than others, all were involved and trying to complete the activity. The learners were enthusiastic about swapping with the bank and I feel sure that introducing the concept without an equation helped as otherwise they would have counted on and been more focused on the answer rather than the strategy. Leah and Antzel seemed to grasp the concept which Luisa will need further support. However in her follow up Explain Everything activity she was more vocal in thinking about the bonds to ten and what she needed to move. All learners will need additional lessons to be really secure and ready to implement this strategy.
