LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE
WALT (We are learning to): Use drama and expression to tell a story for an audience. Recount about an experience including detail.
Teacher Notes/Planning
Each year the Manaiakalani Cluster of schools contribute movies towards a film festival. All movies for the 2016 Festival are available to view at this link. My aim when filming each year is for my learners to experience acting through the use of costumes and becoming characters for the camera.
Brainstorming our movie: All ideas from the class are gathered. Often this can be greatly influenced from movies they have been involved in during previous years or see recently on the big screen.
Filming: Understand that telling a story for an audience involves getting in character and can take multiple takes of the same thing.
Reflection
The success (or not) of my Film Festival movie each year comes from the learners seeing it for the first time. They don't do this until it is on the big screen at Sylvia Park during the Manaiakalani Film Festival. This is some 2 - 3 months after the filming took place. Many of the effects that I choose to use involve a green screen, so as much as I describe to my learners what they need to do, so that they can 'act' their part, they don't get to see the final effect until the day. The students in my class were amazed by our movie and continually request to see the movie. Many of them have left comments on our class blog where our movie is publicly available. It always takes time to plan, film and edit a movie to the standard required for the big screen but it creates great opportunities for conversation and learning for my learners that live on long after the movie has shown.
