LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE
WALT (We are learning to): Use a range of different texts for our information; use headings, glossary and index to help us find answers quickly.
Teacher Notes/Planning
Is our book fiction or non-fiction? How can you tell? What is a table of contents? What is a glossary? What can we use to find information quickly? Text specific vocabulary: predators; ostrich; burrows; steer Comprehension questions:
What do all birds have? Where do flightless birds find food? Where does the ostrich come from? Which bird comes from Australia? What can penguins do? What is a predator? Lead your own discovery: penguin; kiwi; emu;
Other learners in my class were completing an independent activity
following the reading rotation board which is available here.
Reflection
This text was a great choice to use for quickly finding information in the text - introduction of the glossary occurred naturally during the lesson (word: predator). Some learners seemed to use the headings more effectively than others - will be good to practice this over the coming weeks. Use of choice a huge success - did note that some learners still watched all the videos about all the birds. Need to be sure to include in instructions that they can do this, but only after they have finished the whole activity. Use of choice worked really well - definitely need to bring all learners back together to discuss their choices - but will need to scaffold this into a semi formal sharing session (perhaps prior to their next reading with the teacher?). It would be good to signal this to the learners so they have an expectation they will be sharing to back to the group.
