LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE

WALT (We are learning to): Find the fraction of a number when the problem is presented as a word problem.

Other learners in the class were working independently on maths practice tests which I created (addition, subtraction, groupings to ten and times tables) which are available here.

Teacher Notes/Planning

Warm Up activity - revise symbols for fractions (from previous lesson) Introduce the concept of a word problem. Read first problem to the learners. Ask learners to think about our problem and how we can solve it. What is the equation? How many items did we start with? How many are we sharing with the class? Even if learners are able to identify a half of the number (ie the answer) use materials to confirm the answer. Ensure learners know that for one half, materials need to be split into two parts (groups). Repeat with a second half problem. If learners are confident, move onto quarters (followed by thirds, fifths). Ensure learners use sharing to confirm their answer.

Reflection

Learners easily recalled the symbols for basic fractions and showed an understanding of how many parts were in each. I was concerned during the lesson that Leah (closest to the camera) appeared unengaged and didn't contribute very much to the lesson. However, her level of engagement when we moved onto individually working on the activity far surpassed the other learners in the group. While she had been quiet during the small group instruction I could see by how quickly she progressed through her slides and that she'd obviously been paying attention to the lesson and grasped the intended learning. Learners particularly enjoyed the creation aspect of the follow up activity - being able to take images from the resource page and use these to show their understanding of the fraction/equal sharing concept. This activity differed from other activities I have provided where I'd given them the objects on each slide to just move around. A few learners needed to be reminded about how to copy/paste and duplicate while others already had this skill.
