Lesson 12
LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE
WALT (We are learning to): Create a positive digital footprint by creating a quality blog comment on a friends blog post
NB: Pt England School had a school wide mufti day to celebrate the start of the 2016 Olympics in Rio - learners embraced this and are therefore out of uniform in the video.

Teacher Notes/Planning
What makes a quality blog comment? Watch video where blog comments are discussed and note down the five main points.
Draw on the Manaiakalani Positive Blog Commenting display - emphasise the importance of a comment that you would be happy to receive on your own blog.
Positive: How are we going to compliment the author of the blog - what particular part of the blog post did we like? Helpful: What question could you ask? Thoughtful: What connections did you make with this blog post and your own learning/experiences?
Reflection
Learners are were really enthusiastic to comment on each others blog, particularly given we have a class wide challenge throughout the term on blog commenting. Some learners had attempted this at home so it was important to carefully scaffold and ensure that learners were creating a positive digital footprint. While I had initially planned to take this as a whole class lesson, I decided to start with a small group, thereby having a few learners who could help and support the rest of the class during the whole class session. This also gave me an opportunity to see which areas the whole class could potentially need additional support on. During the discussion we talked about different scenarios learners might encounter in blog posts although in retrospect it would have been good to look at one or two specific blog post examples and discuss those in detail. Instead I had learners independently choose a blog post to view and comment on. When I repeat this lesson as a whole class, I think I will experience more success by pre-selecting a couple of blog posts (from other classes perhaps) to discuss as a whole class and then model the writing of the comment by drawing on the responses and ideas from the whole class.
