LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE
WALT (We are learning to): Use vowel rules to help us decode unknown words. Use information in the text and our own experiences to help us make inferences about the text.
Teacher Notes/Planning
Vowel rules - magic 'e' when it is on the end of a word. Decoding words when two vowels are together in a word. Focus on vowel rules: pain; healed; real; Who are the characters in our story? How did Jenny feel about spiders at the beginning of our story? Why did the spider run away when Mo pulled its web down? Why did Jenny keep her fingers away from the sharp chisel? What is a koha? Why did she make a koha for the spider? How was Jenny feeling about spiders at the end of our story? Relating to own experiences: What do you do when you cut your hand? Why do you think they used the spider web? What are some problems which could happen using a spiders web?
Other learners in my class were completing an independent activity
following the reading rotation board which is available here.
Reflection
This text was selected as it had some words that were applicable to the vowel rules I was introducing to the learners - it also allowed for inferencing and relating to own experiences. It took a while to draw out answers from the learners particularly around inferencing and I’m hopeful that this will improve as we continue to discuss (sometimes as a bigger group so that they are able to share ideas). Some of the learners are SO keen to share they can dominate the discussion and I think by having learners think about some of the questions independently first and bringing their answers to the table they will feel more confident about sharing. Group is getting better at waiting for their turn although often I feel they are not listening to, and taking onboard, the answers and ideas of others which is how they can expand on the ideas they have. I feel it’s really working well with having the group read the text beforehand and spending the majority of the time on rich discussion. The short session on vowel rules went well and this is reinforced with the Tiny Tap activity which I have them repeat twice a week to reinforce this learning.
