Lesson 17
LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE
WALT (We are learning to): Use a range of different texts for our information; use our knowledge of vowel rules to decode unknown words
Teacher Notes/Planning
Who are the characters in our story? Why did Sam make Sonya think she was making lemonade? How did Dad know that Sam had tricked Sonya? Why do you think Sonya wanted to play with Sam? Why did Sam not want to play with Sonya? Why did Sam spend his pocket money on lemonade for Sonya? Why was Sonya upset? How do you think Sonya would have been feeling when the water wasn't turning into lemonade? Why did Sam ask about bubble gum? Lead your own discovery: how do we make lemonade?
Other learners in my class were completing an independent activity
following the reading rotation board which is available here.
Reflection
This lesson went well with the learners all really engaged, particularly with the making of the lemonade. By scaffolding the lesson to include two teacher led sessions, learners were able to work independently and had ideas to bring to each of the discussions. In future I need to include comprehension questions in the activity for all readings to ensure that learners don't skip over any of them - this could be done by questions before each reading to encourage 'reading for purpose'.
Having learners complete some of the activity and think about comprehension questions prior to the small group lesson definitely benefit learners who are more reluctant to share their ideas.
