Lesson 9

LEARNING & TEACHING SEQUENCE

WALT (We are learning to): Use equal sharing to find half and quarter of a number

Other learners in the class were working independently on Study Ladder and maths practice tests which I created (addition, subtraction

and times tables) which are available here.

a

Teacher Notes/Planning

Ascertain that learners know the symbol for half and quarter

Review how to equal share to find half of all objects

Reinforce that both halves must be equal

Introduce a problem involving quarters - use counters/blocks (materials) to demonstrate eg what is one quarter of twelve?

How many equal groups do we need?

How could we share the counters into four equal groups?

Count all objects in each group to illustrate that the groups must be equal

How many counters/blocks do we have in each group?

Therefore what is one quarter of twelve?

Full expanded plan available here

Reflection

This lesson followed on from a whole class lesson last week where we used equal sharing to find half of a number. I particularly wanted to move on in smaller groups so I was able to ascertain which learners had grasped the concept and could differentiate between equal sharing in halves and quarters. This lesson allowed me to do that and I can easily see from the learners' blog posts and Explain Everything activities which learners need further scaffolding and which are ready to move on. Its important to note that the learners' blogs are a record of their learning journey - therefore, on occasion, some of the work they post to their blog (particularly in maths) is not always right the first time. This is definitely the case with this lesson and I can see some learners need additional support to grasp this concept.
