緣起:

Boyan Slat 為荷蘭人，年輕又充滿抱負，由於他對潛水的喜愛，他開始思考海洋垃圾對地球造成的危害

因故，他自己發想的一個可以快速收集海洋垃圾的計畫，此計畫比之前的方法還要便宜又快速

而且，收集來的海洋垃圾還可以賣錢，賣的錢比做那個設備的成本還多，

他預估，如果募款順利，經過他的設計，海洋垃圾可以在幾年內清除，真是振奮人心!

Scientists believe that life on Earth began in the oceans. Covering just over 70% of the surface of our planet, oceans provide a great deal of the food that more than a billion people depend on. Thousands of species of fish, shellfish, squid, shrimp, and other marine life support countless human communities. Even seaweed is consumed as a rich source of vitamins and minerals. The importance of the health of our seas cannot be overemphasized. Unfortunately, though, humankind’s carelessness is causing a serious problem of oceanic life.

Ironically, though people complain and force politicians to clean up their local environment. Hardly anyone even mentions the fact that our oceans are the final resting place of billions of tons of garbage. It brings to mind the phrase “out of sign, out of mind.” When refuse is dumped into the ocean, it doesn’t all sink. Following currents, this trash ends up in circular areas called gyres that cover millions of square kilometers. These slowly rotating whirlpool-like phenomena concentrate plastic and other non-organic materials into what are in effect massive floating garbage dumps.

What is even worse is that millions of animals become entangled in this mass of plastic, fish netting, and other rubbish and die there. To save them and prevent serious pollution from the garbage itself, a clean-up is sorely needed. A 17-year-old engineering student may have come up with an idea that will solve this problem.

Boyan Slat from the Netherlands is the man with the plan. He has devised a series of floating platforms and booms, which drift in the gyres. Using solar and wind power, these constructions pass through and collect trash, storing it for later collection. Some of that junk could be sold to recycling centers. Slat believes that his platforms will pay for themselves. He is already very busy trying to raise funds to put his visionary idea into practice.
