Weird, Wacky, Bizarre Holidays!!!

By Mallory R. & Madi C.

There are so many interesting holidays in the course of the year that people have probably never heard of! There is Deviled Egg Day, Clean Out Your Fridge Day, Toilet Day, Have a Bad Day Day, and Eat a Cranberry Day. There are so many; some holidays even have the same date!

Deviled Egg Day is on Thursday, November 2nd. The originator of Deviled Egg Day is anonymous. They failed to provide any documentation on this day or to take credit. Deviled Eggs are also known as eggs mimosa, stuffed egg, egg salads, or dressed eggs. One can prepare them in many different ways with many different recipes. One way is to boil the eggs then shell them, cut them in half and fill with the hard boiled egg yolk and other ingredients such as mustard and mayonnaise.

National Clean Out Your Fridge Day is on Wednesday, November 15th. This was started by the Whirl Pool Co. The reason for it being on November 15th is because Thanksgiving is coming up in eight days, and people need as much space as they can get for those leftovers. Make sure to clean above and underneath your fridge as well as inside of your fridge.

World Toilet Day is on Sunday, November 19th. World Toilet Day started in 2001. Jack Sim is the founder of World Toilet Day. It was invented because over 4.5 billion people don’t have access to toilets. By 2030, Sustainable Development Goals are going to try to safely manage a toilet in everyone's house.

National Have a Bad Day Day is on Sunday, November 19th. Have a Bad Day Day was created by Ruth and Thomas Roy. It was made so that a person didn’t have to suffer a bad day alone. Have a Bad Day Day is an opportunity to get out there and truly wish the worst of the worst on people with a cheery “Have a Bad Day!”

National Eat a Cranberry Day is on Thursday, November 23rd. The creator is anonymous, just like the Deviled Egg Day creator. This was created to promote the health benefits of cranberries. The cranberry was named from early European Settlers. Cranberries can be processed into jam, juice, and lots more!

In conclusion, there are lots of different weird, wacky, and bizarre holidays, so don’t miss out on any!

Deer Hunting

By Zac C. & Jacob H.

When people go deer hunting, they have to make sure to go on the dates that people are allowed to go hunting. Deer archery starts on September 30th, 2017 and ends on February 4th, 2018. Youth gun season is on November 18th and 19th of 2017. Gun season starts on November 27th, 2017, and it ends on December 3rd, 2017. There is an extra weekend of hunting, and it is on the weekend of December 16th and 17th.

Another season of hunting is muzzleloading. A muzzleloader is any projectile and use of propellant charged from the open to the end of the gun barrel. Muzzleloader season starts on January 6th, 2018 and ends January 9th, 2018.

Hunting license are required to have when you go hunting. Also if a person goes hunting on their own land they don't have to have a hunting license. Hunting license prices for a resident’s annual license are $19 and youth annual license cost $10. When people buy deer tags, they have two different kinds such as either-sex deer tags or antlerless deer tags. The either-sex deer tags for adults are $24 and youth tags are $12. Antlerless deer tags for adults and youths are $15.

When people go hunting, they’re only allowed to hunt with certain guns. The guns are 10 gauge shotguns or smaller using one ball per barrel muzzleloader 0.38 caliber or larger. Handguns have to have a minimum five inch barrel using a straight-walled cartridge 0.357 caliber or larger. Also people have to hunt with certain bows. The amount of deer people are allowed to shoot is one buck and two doe. Some deer hunting rules are people have to wear orange during gun season NO MATTER WHAT! Deer hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. Bullets that people can use are bullets without a shoulder. Bullets without a shoulder are bullets that don’t bend in at the top.

To sum things up, when people go deer hunting, make sure to follow all the rules.

History of Norway

By Davin R. & Connor B.

Norway is a creation of melted glaciers and warming temperatures. The area became habitable around 12 BC. The coastlines provided great areas for fishing, hunting, and sealing (the act of hunting for seals). They raised livestock like pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats. They also grew crops such as wheat, oats, and barley.

One of the most famous periods of Norway was the Viking era. The late 8th-century was the first record of Vikings. It was the invasion of Lindisfarne. It is an island off the coast of England. Lindisfarne was a monastery and was considered one of the greatest Christian sanctuaries in Western Europe. Vikings started to raid a monastery at Jarrow, in Northumbria. In the future, Wales and Ireland would come to an invasion of Vikings.

The Vikings were well trained, had chain-mail armor, and they believed if they died in battle they would go to Valhalla. Valhalla is the Viking version of heaven.

Now in present Norway, the Prime Minister is Erna Solberg. She was born on February 24th, 1961 making her 56 years old. She has been the leader for the Conservative Party since May 2004.

To sum things up, Norway has had a very odd and unique history, and it is now a unique place to visit and to live.

Weapon Safety

By Brook S. & Josh B.

Make sure that everyone handles any type of weapon with care. The first thing a child should learn about weapons is that if they find one they should take it to an adult immediately. If someone knows how to, they should check to see if the weapon is unloaded or if it's loaded. They also should check to see if the safety is on or off. If they don't know how to do either of these things, they then should put it in a high area where it can't fall or a young kid cannot reach. Each gun and even bows are different. Some guns will have a handle that it's pulled back to get the bullet out, and some a lever can be pulled that lets the gun open in the middle to make it easy access to pull the bullet out. The way to see if the safety is on is to look on the side of almost every weapon. There will be a button or a switch that can push forward and backward. Most of the time when the button is backward, the safety is on, but if it is pushed forward, then the safety is off. The weapon will also have the word “on’’ and “off’’ on it. If the safety is on, the weapon cannot shoot. As soon as the weapon is off safety, it is ready to shoot.

Whenever there's a gun, it should be kept unloaded and locked up. Many people leave guns out in the reach of children. Most of the guns are loaded and ready to shoot. Throughout 2014 to 2016, there has been 152 children's deaths due to guns out in the open and loaded. Here is an example. In 2015, a babysitter in North Carolina left a two year old unattended, and the two year old found a twenty gauge shotgun and shot himself in the chest. He died in the hospital, and the babysitter was charged for involuntary manslaughter. This shows that even a two year old can manage to grab a gun off the table.

These are some safety precautions for a bow and arrow. There are a couple different types of bows; the two most common bows are the compound bow and the crossbow. While shooting a crossbow, make sure that their fingers are under the foregrip (the part you hold). If they don't have their fingers under that part, when they go to shoot, the arrow and string can hit their thumb and cut it very badly, and it can also rip their fingers off. When putting the broadheads (arrow tips) on the arrows, be very careful because the broadheads are razors that can cut something very easily.

As a person can see, weapon safety is a big part. Everyone should definitely inform younger children about gun safety and what they should do if they find a gun.

Thrill of a Lifetime

By Aniah D. & Lexi B.

Knott’s Berry Farm was opened as a tourist destination in 1920 by Walter Knott and his wife Cordelia Knott to accommodate the needs of people vacationing. This park is located in Buena Park, California and is currently a hit vacation spot. The park covers 160-acres and is the 12th most visited park in the world! Knott’s Berry Farm is open from 10am to 6pm, but people could stay overnight at the hotel. The park includes a water park, an amusement park, a hotel, and plenty of other tourist destinations, but the seemingly normal park has a scary secret.

During September and October, the park unfolds into a terrifying and horror filled attraction. Knott’s Scary Farm is the other side of the theme park. That is the side they hide until the time is right. A ghost town is created and tons of people come in each year to be transformed into horrifying monsters. Most people don’t realize how much effort goes into creating this side of the park. The monsters work very hard every night to make sure they scare the visitors.

Makeup and costume artists are working behind the scene to make these

people look like they are actually monsters. Starting the night off, the monsters are fitted into special costumes. The time this might take is different depending on how long you have been scaring there. If you have been there for a few years the costume designers usually know what you would like to wear but when you are new to scaring the costumes may take longer to figure out. Then they are rushed off to the makeup artist. The numerous makeup artists work tirelessly to make it look as terrifying and bone-chilling as possible. The monsters decide if they want to just be regular scarers or if they want to be sliders. Sliders are monsters who have metal stuck to their hands, elbows and knees so they can slide across the ground to scare people easier. After that the monsters are sent out into the park to scare people.

Some of the attractions are The Ghost Town Streets, CarnEVIL, Fiesta de los Muertos, and The Hollow. Some rides at the park are Ghost Rider, Jaguar, and Bigfoot Rapids. The tickets to the park start at around $100 for a full stay but to go to Knott’s Scary farm it is $42.

All in all, Knott’s Berry Farm is a very interesting place full of secrets.

Insect Armageddon

By Nathan D. & Matthew I.

Over the past 25 years, the amount of insects has been dropping, and recently their numbers have been dropping faster every year. Over three-quarters of insects in nature reserves vanished. No one knows exactly why this is happening. Scientists have been studying nature reserves all across Germany to gather data about this. Theories on why this is happening is climate change and wild animal habitats being destroyed. Car windshields are also believed to be a reason for a major decline in insects population since a car can kill many bugs. Scientists have ruled out weather and changes to the nature reserve’s landscape as a reason of the population’s decline.

Previous reports of insects declines indicated the European grassland butterflies declined 50% in the past decades. New data was gathered on other flying insects that are rarely studied. These flying insects include the wasp and the fly. This also shows a much stronger indication of a big decline. Insect abundance has dropped by a whole 75%, and their population is still going down.

Insects are very important and can be a key role to the environment. Some insects like mosquitos, flies, and wasps can pollinate flowers. Insects like mosquitoes, mayflies, flies, and other insects can provide food for other animals. A mayfly can actually be a sign of a good, healthy environment with clean water. Insects can help shape an animal habitat and maintain a healthy environment for animals by pollinating flowers or showing that water is clean and the environment.

In conclusion, insects are very important to the environment, but they are declining in population. This could be very bad for the environment and the human race.

Leaves are Falling, Autumn's Calling!

Some people might be wondering why leaves change colors and fall, well there is a good reason. When leaves begin to change color from green, to yellow, to bright orange, to red, people will know that trees are beginning their long winter rest.

Leaf colors come from pigments. The three pigments that color the leaves are chlorophyll, carotenoid, and anthocyanin. Chlorophyll is a green pigment present in all green plants. Chlorophyll also breaks down the green color and the yellow to orange colors appear. Carotenoid creates bright yellows and oranges in plants. Anthocyanins adds the color red to the plants.

During the spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where most of the foods necessary for the tree’s growth are manufactured. This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll. Leaves change color as the earth makes its 365-day journey around the

sun; parts of the planet get fewer hours of sunlight at certain times of the year. Trees respond to decreasing amounts of sunlight by producing less chlorophyll, and the leaves begin to change colors.

Some people might also be wondering if leaves change color because of the weather and they do. In the daytime, the leaves can produce lots of sugars, but the cool night temperatures prevent the sugar sap from flowing through the leaf veins and down into the branches and trunk.

Some people might already know that leaves fall off trees, but do they know why? Many types of trees shed their leaves as a strategy to survive harsh weather conditions. A tree’s roots, branches, and twigs can endure freezing temperatures, but most leaves are not so tough. Therefore, leaves fall during cold temperatures. Evergreen trees don’t lose their leaves because their needles are covered in a heavy wax

coating, and the fluids inside the cells contain substances that resist freezing.

In conclusion, leaves change color by breaking down chlorophyll, and they fall because of the weather.
