Maui, Hawaii

Maui has a very interesting history. Legends say, Demigod Maui pulled the Hawaiian Islands from the sea and lassoed the sun on top of Haleakala, Hawaii's highest point. The island was named after Demigod Maui. Maui is known as “Valley Isle.” The name comes from the fact that central Maui sits between two mountains.
Some fun facts about Maui are; Maui’s area is 727 mi squared. The population is 144,444 (2010). They use U.S. dollars and credit cards.
The average temperature in Maui is 75 to 85 degrees fahrenheit. The state bird is the Nene, a type of goose. The island's most famous flower is a pink Damask rose. Their state dance is the Hula. The Hula is a dance characterized by rhythmic body movements. A hula dancer dances to the Hula song or chant used for the Hula. The name of their state fish is Humuhumunukunukuapuaa.
The native language of Hawaii is Hawaiian. The language was recognized as the official state language of Hawaii in 1978. Hawaii is also the only American state to have two official languages, Hawaiian and English. A third unofficial language is also widely spoken, Pidgin which is a slang combining words from any aspects of Island life and Culture.
Overall, Maui, Hawaii is a beautiful place and has many interesting things.
History of the Cleveland Indians

Some people are really big Indians fans, because they went to the World Series in 2016. The Cleveland Indians are a professional baseball team from Cleveland, Ohio. They first started playing in the 1900s and before they were called the Indians, they were called the Lake Shores. The Cleveland Indians have been around for 117 years; their first game was played on April 22, 1901.
1908- Addie Joss was inducted into the Hall of Fame, due to a 74 pitch perfect game.
1914- September 27, 1914, Nap Lajoie earns respect for getting a 3,000 hit mark.
1915- They first used the name “Indians.”
1925- An Indians player, Tris Speaker, got his 3,000 hit on May 17.
1940- Bob Feller got an opening day no hitter.
2007- The Indians received the American League Central Crown. They earned it with an eight game lead against the New York Yankees.
2016- The Indians had one of their greatest seasons, since 2007.
Therefore, the Cleveland Indians have had great players, and a lot of people love to watch them.
Sleep-How Much Do You Really Need?

People need a lot of sleep so they can be active. People who are younger need more sleep than people who are older. Kids need 10-11 hours of sleep, teens need 8.5-9.5 hours of sleep, and adults need 7-9.
People spend up to one third, or 229,961 hours, of their lives asleep. People who don’t get enough sleep can act grumpy and short-tempered, without knowing it. A main reason people do not get enough sleep is because they sleep during the day, or sleep in too late. Also, people who drink coffee get more caffeine and stay up too late. Some effects of not getting enough sleep are: memory problems, cognitive dysfunction, depression, yawning, hallucinations, cold and flu, weight gain, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even accidental death.
Monroeville students were asked how much sleep they get and why they think sleep is so important.
Jacob H. stated, “I get six hours of sleep, usually. I think that sleep is important because if you don’t have sleep, you won’t have the right amount of energy.”
Duncan S. said, “I get about six hours of sleep. We need sleep so we are happy.”
Laci H. confirmed, “I get, usually, four to five hours of sleep a night. Sleep is important because if you do not get sleep, your body will start to shut down.”
Sleep is very important, and if you don't get enough, you will have low energy, be grumpy, and not interactive.
Animal Cruelty

Acts of violence and neglect against animals are considered animal cruelty. Every day hundreds of thousands of animals are put through the torture of animal hoarding, dog fighting, and puppy mills.
What is a puppy mill? A puppy mill is a large scale commercial facility that breeds dogs only for profit. Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions without the proper care. Female dogs are bred at any point in time, without any time to recover. With being bred in the mills, the dogs are prone to congenital and hereditary conditions, which includes: heart disease, worms, and blood and respiratory problems. Also, the puppies are separated from their mothers at a young age. The puppies tend to suffer from fear, anxiety, and other problems with their behavior.
According to aspca.org, “Animal hoarding is a serious problem in the United States.” Every year, just about 250,000 animals fall as a victim to animal hoarding. Due to their conditions, the animals have no way to receive care for their common necessities such as food, medicine, and water. The person hoarding the animals usually, but not always, have a social disorder or problem, and they hoard animals to compensate for their problems.
Animals don’t deserve to be treated badly. People should stand up and stop the abuse when they see it happening. Hundreds and thousands of animals are being cruelly treated every year.
The Game and History of Volleyball

Do people really know the history and game of volleyball? Some people might, but the majority of the people don’t. Volleyball was created by William G. Morgan on February 9, 1895. Volleyball took characteristics from the games tennis and handball.
The game of volleyball became popular overtime. On July 7th, 1896, the first volleyball game was played at Springfield College. In 1900, a special ball was designed for volleyball. Also, in 1951, volleyball was played by over 50 million people each year in over 60 countries.
Volleyball is a team sport that includes two teams that are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding the ball on the other team's court under organized rules. The player on each team with the different colored jersey is the libero. When not in play, the libero can replace any back row player without prior notice to the officials. It has been a part of the official program of the summer Olympic games since 1964.
Kylee B., a student at Monroeville Schools says, “It’s fun to play volleyball and it makes me stay fit. My favorite thing is hitting a ball on the ten foot line.”
Reece K. stated, “I like the game of volleyball because, it’s fun to play and you get to be with friends.”
Sydney M. said, “I like the game volleyball, because it’s very competitive between the two teams. My favorite part of playing volleyball is I can hangout with my friends and also make new ones.”
Many people love the game of volleyball, and now they do know the game of volleyball .
New Technology in Space

The new space technology is always more advanced. A big part of advanced technology are satellites. Humans use every day from watching TV to being on there phones. NASA also has the International Space Station (ISS). There have been people living on the space station since November 2, 2000. Since then, there have been 200 explorers that have visited, 15 nations have contributed, and 600 experiments have been conducted on the ISS, International Space Station” according to NASA. The ISS is the biggest man-made satellite to have ever orbited the earth. It is easily seen with the naked eye, and the solar panels can be seen with a amature teliscope.
Two students at Monroeville Schools were asked what they think about the new space technologies.
Riley B. stated, “I think it is good, because they go up in space to get what they need to complete their mission. Also, I think that it will be good for the future.”
Kadon M. replied, “I think that the new technology is good, because it makes it easier to use our phones and communicate with each other. Also I think that it will be good in the future.”
The space shuttles are mostly made of titanium alloys to protect the body and makes it harder to get destroyed. The ships also have carbon tiles on the bottom so they can keep it at a warm and comfortable environment for working. The Scientists need a comfortable environment so they can study the solar system, and other planets that are in space. The Scientists need to focus as hard as possible, so they don't miss any information. 5
New technology in space is a good benefit for the future to make it easier to travel and communicate easier.
Aliens and Their Existence

Some people think it’s okay to believe in different things, but some might say, “Why believe in aliens?” People believe aliens exists because of Egyptian Hieroglyphics. Scientists and experts from www.msn.com stated, “Egyptian Hieroglyphics show engravings that suggest alien-like flying machines that visited the ancient Nile Valley in the past.”
Scientists sent the United States Military to Roswell Air Force Base in New Mexico to do some research on alien existence. In 2015, 50% of people believed in alien existence. Another reason why people believe in aliens is because they think they have seen alien fossils. Most people believe that they saw aliens because they saw unusual flashing lights in the sky, which makes them think a UFO is coming down from space. When people see unusual flashing lights, some people think that aliens are coming to abduct them.
In 1961, Betty and Barney Hill saw strange lights and experienced loss of memory, while they were driving. About 3.7 million people believe that they have experienced alien abduction.
Three students from Monroeville Junior High School were asked if they believe in aliens and why? They were also asked, if they believe in alien abductions and why?
Willow B. said, “No, I don’t believe in aliens because they haven't shown themselves to people before. No, I don’t believe in alien abduction because if aliens would abduct people, most of the population wouldn’t be here today.”
“Yes, I believe in aliens because people could be aliens. Yes, I believe in alien abduction because all the missing people could have been abducted,” stated Alexandra J.
Savannah H. states, “I do not believe in aliens because I haven’t seen physical proof. No, I don’t believe in alien abductions because, supposedly, they were asleep when they were abducted, and there’s no one to prove it.”
In conclusion, many people have different opinions about aliens and if aliens can abduct people.
