Crayola Crayons- The History and the Newly Discontinued

Kaleigh S., Lydia L., & Zenna B.

Crayola Crayons were the first crayons ever made for children on June 10, 1903. The word Crayola Crayon came from the two French words chalk (craie) and oily (oleaginous). The first box of crayons ever sold was sold for a nickel a box, and there were only eight crayons in the very first box. “They have hundreds of crayons now including: sparkle with glitter, glow in the dark, flower scented, changing of colors, and the washable crayons,” said ThoughCo.com. Crayola was founded by cousins, Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith in New York City on March 31, 1885.

Crayola has announced that they’re retiring a crayon for the first time ever. According to abc11.com, the colors endangered of leaving are: red, yellow, blue, orange, green, violet, black, carnation pink, yellow orange, blue green, blue violet, white, violet red, Dandelion, cerulean, Apricot, scarlet, green yellow, indigo, and gray. The crayon that is leaving has been announced to be Dandelion. The decision happened Friday, March 31, 2017 at New York’s Time Square. Also, according to Chris Wilson, journalist for Time U.S., “removing the yellow shade Dandelion from its 24-pack of crayons replacing it with an unrevealed shade of blue.”

According to Isaiah S., “I think that Crayola Crayons are unique and colorful, and I think gray is going to retire because it is straight up depressing.”

Charlie R. said, “I do not like Crayola Crayons because they are very expensive, and I think that the color black is going to retire because it’s depressing.”

Kady R. stated, “I like Crayola Crayons because they are creative, and you can draw nice pictures with them. I also think that the color yellow is going to retire, because not many people use it.”

Crayola Crayons have been around for a long time, and people enjoy these crayons. Since Crayola is retiring a crayon for the first time ever, some people aren’t too happy with their decision of replacing the Dandelion crayon with another shade of blue.

Easter Hopped Right Around the Corner

Olivia S. & Braylee W.

Easter is a holiday that is celebrated mostly by Christians. Christians celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox. The vernal equinox is the day in spring when the length of day and night are equal.

“What is Easter?” someone might ask? It is when Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Easter is the most important holy day for Christians. Jesus was crucified on Friday, and rose from the dead on Sunday.

There are many traditions that people live by and do every year. Some traditions include: Easter egg hunts, the mythical Easter bunny, Easter breakfast, and coloring Easter eggs. The Easter bunny became a tradition in America around the 1700s. Although, Americans didn’t start the Easter bunny, German immigrants brought the tradition with them.

According to dailyjournalonline.com, “It is believed that Anglo-Saxon Goddess of Spring, Eostre had a hare as her companion. The hare symbolizes fertility and rebirth. Later, Christians changed the symbol of the hare to the Easter bunny.” Easter got its name from the name Eostre. Eostre was worshipped long before Jesus was born. Easter is also called Pascha in Greek or Latin. Pascha means Resurrection Sunday.

A few Monroeville students were asked, “What is your favorite part about Easter and why?” They were also asked how they celebrate.

Ethan S. said, “I like hunting for the Easter-morning eggs because my whole family gets together. We celebrate by going to our Grandmother’s house, and she gives us gifts and really good food.”

“My favorite part is the candy because it is good for your stomach. I also like the Easter egg hunts because I always win and I get exercise. My family celebrates by going to my grandma’s and aunt’s house,” said Parker A.

“My favorite part is going to my Grandma’s house and eating food because she makes really good food,” said Olivia Sattler. “My family celebrates by hunting for eggs and going to my grandparent’s house for food.”

Easter is a special holiday celebrated by many people around the world.

Ford Mustangs

Tyler M. & Toby T.

The car that comes to mind when someone says the classic American car is the Ford Mustang. The Mustang was named after the horse and has a symbol of a horse on the grille. There have been many different styles and models of Mustangs, Ford has been making Mustangs since the 1960’s. The oldest Mustang sold was in January 24, 2013 and is known to be one of the rarest Mustangs to be sold, it was valued to be worth at one million dollars.

The newest Ford Mustang made is the 2017 Ford Mustang, it has 300 to 435 horsepower and has two models, the coupe and the convertible. Over nine million Mustangs have been sold to date. We asked two student at Monroeville Schools about their opinion of the new and old Mustangs.

Damian B. said “The older ones, because they last longer and they look more cool. Also, I like the older style better than the new one.”

Garrett M. said “I like the old ones, because they look more cool and more powerful.”

The Mustang needed to be affordable while keeping the the high end look, so many of its parts had to come from Ford itself; the car was sleek, fast, and scary looking. Popularity, was what put Ford ahead of the game one of the biggest reasons for that was the V8 engine and they had big blocks. It wasn't fuel efficient but it allowed a fast top speed of 131 MPH, or 210 kilometers an hour for this time that was really fast.

Back then the idea of losing weight to gain speed wasn’t ideal for most companies like Ford so their Mustangs weighed a lot. This meant that the top speed was a hard thing to achieve but they were also really safe since they are heavy. Also, it will keep you safe when you wreck unlike the person you might crash into with your common Honda or Chevy.

The classic Mustangs as of today may not be able to keep up with their younger brothers and sisters but they make up for it in style.

Ice Cream

Hunter V. & Lily S.

Have people ever wondered who made ice cream, or how they did? Ice cream was known to reach back from centuries, some people even think it was even before B.C. Alexander the Great was known for liking frozen treats; he would usually take snow or ice and put honey or nectar in it. Alexander isn’t the only one that liked it. King Solomon liked frozen treats too. During harvesting season, he would have frozen drinks. Claudius Caesar would send people in the mountains to get ice and would put fruit and juice in it.

A thousand years later, Marco Polo went to Italy and came back with a close recipe to ice cream which was Sherbet. The first time ice cream was recorded was the 16th century. England and Italy found ice cream at the same time. Before they called it ice cream, they called it “Creamed Ice.”

Catherine De Medici found a similar recipe to ice cream called gelato. She would always give it to Henry II of France. In the 1660’s, ice cream was introduced to the public. The silicon Procopio made a recipe mixing milk, eggs, cream and butter. They made the Procopio Cafe which was the first cafe of Paris.

The first time that ice cream was introduced in America was 1744 from the Maryland Governor William Bladen. George Washington spent over $200 on ice cream. Dolly Madison made the first strawberry ice cream. In America, at first, ice cream was an exotic treat, until the 1800th, when they made ice cream shops. America made root beer floats, and sundaes, but they changed sunday to sundae because they didn’t want any connection about the sabbath day. In World War II, people fighting in war would eat ice cream. In the 70s through 90s, ice cream was very popular. Now today, ice cream is the most popular treat, according to google. America has over 1.8 million tubs of ice cream a year.

Xander M. said, “Vanilla ice cream is the best because it is good.”

Mackenzie P. said, “I like cotton candy. It is good and I like the flavor.”

Ice cream is a very popular treat. People at school get rewarded when they do great things. There are over 80, 000 ice cream shops in America and over 1,000,000 flavors; ice cream is really good. if people haven’t had ice cream, they should because it is delicious.

History of Monroeville

Tana S. & Kylee B.

How well do people really know Monroeville? Monroeville, over many years, has changed in many ways.

In 1818, the first schoolhouse in the township was made on lot number 272, also known as the octagon house. This schoolhouse was probably made out of logs but they don’t really know what it was built with. In 1868, Union school was built on Broad Street. The bus garage today, was known as the gym back then. On April 10th 1868, the Monroeville Union school was created by a vote of the people in the district. The total cost of building and equipment was about $30,000. In 1857, the elementary building was built south of the original building. In 1964, kitchen and cafeteria was remodeled, and the Industrial Arts addition was added on. Also, in 1965, the breezeway was enclosed to connect the high school and the elementary building. In 1988, the band and the choir rooms were built, the choir room, now known as Mrs. Harvey's office. In 1989, the Board Office was added to the east side of the elementary building. In 1992, the Poth building was constructed between the Vocational room and the high school gym. In 2014, a two story elevator was added to the North end of the high school, the cafeteria mural was donated, the kitchen was remodeled, and the preschool through grade three building addition was added to the ssouth side of the elementary building. In 2016, the Monroeville Athletic Complex (MAC) was built.

Mary Beth, a custodian for Monroeville schools was asked about the changes within the school, she said, “The teachers are different, the Jr. High classrooms are in a different place, and there was no breezeway between the elementary and high school buildings.”

Mr. Boltz, an industrial technology and woodcrafts teacher at Monroeville school, states, “There were no distractions like phones or computers.”

Mrs. Fondriest, a 2nd grade teacher at Monroeville school said “The new building is different, the payment now at lunch, and also there were different principles.”

From now and back then Monroeville has changed over many years in many different ways.

Terror of Tornadoes

Zach H. & Melana A.

Tornado season lasts for four months: March, April, May and June. Tornadoes don't just happen during tornado season; they can happen any time of the year. A tornado is a rotating, funnel shaped cloud that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground with whirling winds that can reach 300 mph.

Tornadoes can occur when a warm front meets a cold front, forming a thunderstorm, which can create one or more tornadoes. Tornadoes are often called twisters. There is an average of 1,224 tornadoes per year in the United States. Damage paths of tornadoes can be in excess of one mile wide and 50 miles long and tornadoes are most likely to occur between three p.m. and nine p.m., but they can occur at anytime. Tornadoes can last between half an hour to four hours long, in extreme cases, they can be 75 feet tall.

To stay safe during a tornado, don’t open the windows, go to the lowest floor to a room with the least amount of windows. Another thing a person can do to stay safe during a tornado is don't leave the building to try to escape the tornado and keep away from all windows or glass doorways. If a person is in a car during a tornado and anyone can safely drive in tornado. If there is a building near by, go in the building and if there is no building, people can get out of their car and go into a ditch. If people are in a car do not get out and go under a bridge or overpass this increases your chance of injury or death.

There are many levels of tornadoes, A F1 tornado can have speeds from 72 mph to 112 mph, which can move an automobile. A F2 tornado can have speeds from 113 mph to 157 mph it can damage an house and almost pick it up. A F3 tornado has speeds up to 158 mph to 206 mph it can tear a house right out of the ground and throw it very far. A F4 tornado is one of the most devastating tornado ever recorded the speeds could go from 207 mph to 260 mph which can damage everything in its path. A F5 is the most destructive tornado, this tornado can have speeds from 261 mph to 318 mph entire houses can be completely destroyed.

Overall, tornadoes are very dangerous and can cause a lot of damage, so make sure to stay safe.
