Neon, Hammer Pants, and Rubik's Cubes

Lily S. & Braylee W.

People believe that the 1980’s was a very bright time period. People in the 80’s had many hobbies, and didn’t play with phones, iPods, or tablets.

Some of the hobbies in the 1980’s are similar to our hobbies today. A couple were: playing video games, skating, Rubik’s cube, BMX bikes, listening to music, playing board games, and a lot more.

Watching TV was a big hobby. Some really popular movies in the 1980’s were:

The Goonies, E.T., The Lost Boys, The Outsiders, Gremlins. The 80’s version of a TV looked like a box with bad graphics. Shows they watched were Full House, 60 Minutes, He-Man, and more. Famous people in movies, or shows were Corey Feldman, Corey Haim, Mia Sara, and Alex Winter were some of actors and actresses.

The people in the 80’s also liked listening to music, like people do today. Famous singers were Pat Benatar, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Blondie. Famous bands were AC/DC, Queen, Bon Jovi, Journey, and U2. Famous songs were Living on a Prayer, Sweet Dreams, Don’t Stop Believin’, Heartbreaker, Bohemian wrapcity, Call Me, You Give Love a Bad Name, and Happy Together.

Shopping was another 80’s hobby. Going to the mall was the greatest place to go shopping. Some people think that the 80’s style was pretty exotic. Most of the time girls would wear leggings with shorts, leg warmers, and half down sleeves. Most of the times guys would wear jeans, flannels, and a t-shirt. Popular stores were Miller’s Outpost, Service Merchandise, and Casual Corners. They didn’t just shop for clothes, they shopped for music, shows, and movies too.

People were asked, “When you think of the 80’s? What comes to mind, and why?” They were also asked, “What is your favorite thing from the 80’s?”

Mikaela B. said, “Afros come to my mind when I hear the 80’s because they have that style. My favorite part about the 80’s is the movie Grease.”

Briana S. said, “Disco comes to mind when I hear the 80’s because they were bright. My favorite thing about the 80’s is the bright neon colors.”

Kadon M. said, “Muscle cars and hippies come to mind when I hear the 80’s because that's what they did. My favorite part about the 80’s were the muscle cars.” The people that were interviewed don’t know that much of the 80’s.

Some of hobbies in the 80’s we still do today, although we don’t do it often as they did.

History of The Famous Drive-In

Justin C. & Toby T.

There are many Drive-Ins around the country. In 1933, a man named Richard Hollingshead opened the first drive-in. By 1958, the number of drive-ins peaked about 4,063.

The drive-ins did not really start to become popular until the 50s. Drive-ins only used to show PG and PG-13 movies, but now they show rated R movies as well.

This weekend at the norwalk drive they are playing Alien Covenant and Snatched. The cost for children four and under is free. Children five to ten is $1.00, and children 11 and up is $8.00.

Some students were asked what they think of the drive-in, and if they were going.

“I think that it is fun to go to the drive-in and I am going to be going quite a bit this summer,” stated Clay K.

Reece K. explained, “I think going to the drive-in is fun because you get to hang out with friends, and I am only going if there is a good movie playing.”

Zach S. stated, “We are going soon and I think that it is a good place to go and hang out with friends and family.”

More than 75 percent of the drive-ins in the country are privately owned small businesses, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. The average entry pay for the drive-in is $10.00.

Many people go to the drive-in, so it could be a fun summer activity.
