Spark Up and See Fireworks on the 4th

Hannah L., Grace C., and Kylee O.

What traditions do families do for July 4th? There are many popular traditions that people do.

One tradition is hanging the flag; this is a representation that shows the freedom that Americans have because of the Revolutionary War.

People could go to a parade. Many people go to watch people dance, pass out candy, and see their favorite balloon animals. Today, parades are a few hours long of balloons, floats, and marching bands.

Also, people can make ice cream. Thomas Jefferson was credited for being the author of the first known ice cream recipe recorded by an American.

People could set off fireworks. When the Revolutionary War against Britain was going on, citizens would gather to watch the new nation’s sky illuminate a grand display meant to raise spirits.

Adults could have a block party. People have block parties to gather family and friends because that’s what people did back when the Revolutionary War was going on. During the block party, they have barbeques because in the early 1800s, Virginia Colonists got together to smoke large animals over a fire pit.

Delaney G., was asked what she does on July 4th and she said, “I watch fireworks and sometimes go camping.”

When asked the same question, Isaac R. said, “I go camping with Trevor S. and watch fireworks too.”

All in all, traditions for 4th of July are important to us Americans.

Where Will You Go On Vacation?

Jeremiah L. & Cole K.

Summer vacations are some of the most popular times in a child's life. They remember the vacation throughout their life, cherishing the moments. Ohio has a number of variations of vacation choices. One of the spots is Cedar Point, an amusement park in Sandusky, that is a one of a kind location. They have a resort called “Hotel Breakers” that people can stay at and relax, or they have a waterpark where the people can come and chill in the water. Admission fees to the park are $72 for an adult.

Another spot is Hocking Hills, a place that people can go to for a night or stay for a week. There are caves for families to explore or just little spots in forested areas. There are also very nice cabins that families can stay in. For a cabin it is between $400 and $600 (depending on how long the person stays there).

Some other spots are Great Wolf Lodge, Kalahari, and Castaway Bay. All of these locations are waterparks located in Sandusky. Castaway Bay is related to Cedar Point, where people can take their kids to see the beloved Peanuts cast. All of these locations have a mascot with the Great Wolf employees have a lot of animals from a wolf to an owl, and Kalahari has an elephant. Most children love these locations because the lovable mascots are there but some children are appreciated of their mascot.

The top ten less money, but best vacation spots are Best Western Port Clinton, Quail Hollow Resort Trademark Collection Hotel, Sawmill Creek Resort, Cedar Point Castaway Bay, Hotel Breakers, Great Wolf Lodge, Best Western Penn-Ohio Inn and Suites, Hampton Inn Dayton/Dayton Mall, The Hotel at Oberlin, and Red Roof Inn.

Two more places people go to on their vacation is Put-In-Bay and Kelley’s Island. Both are little islands that families can go to to rent a house and relax for a while. Traveling to Kelley’s Island is mostly tackled by taking a ferry, same with Put-In-Bay. Over the summer, about 1,500 people travel to the two islands combined for a relaxing vacation. The two islands are one of the most visited summer spots in Ohio.

In Ohio, there are a ton of vacation spots, and people go to them enjoy over the summer. Now knowing of these places where will most people go on vacation?

The Lefty Grove baseball league season started on May 24th against Schild’s IGA, but lost 19 to 9. Their first game was scheduled for May 21st for the Monroeville Eagles who were supposed to play against JDB Home Improvement, but the game was rained out and rescheduled for May 26 and won 13-1. They also played on May 29th against Schild’s IGA again and won 16-4. To see the schedule for Lefty Groves Senior Division click on the link below.

The Senior division has many different rules than the younger divisions. Players are allowed to wear metal cleats, step off of any base, steal bases before the ball passes home plate, and even run on a dropped third strike. A drop third strike is when a third strike is dropped by the catcher and the batter may try to run to first base; if the runner gets to first without being called out, the third strike out will not count. To see the rule book, click on the link below.

No player may pitch in more than 10 innings in a three day period. This is to make sure that a pitcher does not injure themself. The distance from the pitcher's mound to home plate differs with age. A 15 year old or any player who played for Junior Varsity has to pitch from 60 feet. Any 16 year old is not allowed to pitch at anytime. Everybody else pitches from the 54 foot mound.

Duncan S. said, “We went undefeated and won the championship last year so we’ll probably do it again this year.”

Braden C. said, “It’s just gonna be awesome,” when asked about the baseball season.

Boating Safety

Owen W., Brice M., Riley B.

There is a lot of safety when it comes to boating in the state of Ohio. In the state of Ohio, anyone has to be at the age of 12 and older to operate a PWC. A PWC is a scooter, jet ski, and comically a boatercycle. Kids the age 12 to 15 may operate if they have an education certificate and if there is an adult 18 years and older. Younger kids, like the age of 16, may operate without supervision if they have an education certificate. Adults over the age of 18 who were born after January 1, 1982 may supervise or operate. Anyone born before the year of 1982 may operate without an education certificate.

Boaters who operate vessels powered by greater than 10 horsepower, which is how much power the engine has, and who was born on or after January 1st, 1982, and required to successfully complete a N.A.S.B.L.A. or a approved boating course or a proficiency exam. Boaters who fulfill in this age group who are stopped by the law enforcement have 72 hours to produce proof of completion.

To operate a legal boat, the boat has to have thirteen certain Things. First there should always be a fire extinguisher, anchor and rope, help signs and a noise siren and distress flag so if the boater need help, someone can notify the state game warden or the U.S coast guard to help the boater get back shore safely. Another thing the vehicle should have is lights approved by the U.S Coast guard. The boat should also have a backfire arrestor and a personal flotation device.

The Ohio River is considered to be “federal waters,” and boaters need to comply with all U.S. Coast Guard requirements. When operating on the river bound by Ohio and Kentucky, all Ohio and Kentucky laws are in effect.

Barring any local rules or regulations, it is legal to boat on anybody of water as long as you don’t cross private land to do so. The land under a river or stream is considered to be the property of the adjacent landowner. Violators of this requirement are guilty of a misdemeanor of the fourth degree, if the violation is not related to a collision, injury to a person, or damage to property. Punishable by a fine of no more than $250, a term of imprisonment of no more than 30 days or both punishments.

If the violation is related to a collision, injury to a person, or damage to property, it is a misdemeanor of the third degree, which is punishable by a fine of no more than $500, a term of imprisonment of no more than 60 days, or both punishments.

Any person who operates a boat over 10 horsepower and commits a violation that involves a threat to the safety of people or property must be ordered by the court to successfully complete a boating education course approved by the national association of State Boating Administrators before the offender is allowed to operate any boat greater than 10 horsepower on Ohio waters violations such as a court order is punishable as contempt under existing law.

If you were born after January 1, 1982 you have to take a boating course and if you are stopped by law enforcement you have 72 hours to present a licence or certificate of your boating course.

All in all, boating can be very dangerous and you have to be safe while doing it. For more information go to http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/
