Trevor S. commented on how he thinks the eighth

grade is going to do this season. “We are going undefeated and are winning the FCC.”

The team had too many people on the seventh graders, so the coaches had to cut four players. The eighth grade only has ten players on the team. The seventh grade has 12 people now on the team. The coaches didn’t have to cut anyone from the eighth grade team.

The team has only two scrimmages to start the season. The two teams scrimmage Buckeye Central and Willard. The junior high has 14 games total this season. The team plays every team twice; all the 14 games are in Firelands Conference.

This holiday dates back to November 1621. The Pilgrims celebrated Thanksgiving to celebrate the first successful harvest in the new world. They also had a Thanksgiving prayer time prior to this. When the newly arrived Pilgrims and Wampanoag tribe gathered at Plymouth for an Autumn harvest celebration, they called it the, “First Thanksgiving.”

Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. This year Thanksgiving is celebrated on November 24, 2016. It is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Franklin D. Roosevelt had officially made the fourth Thursday of November Thanksgiving day in 1942.

Some of the most common foods ate at Thanksgiving are turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, corn bread, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, corn, rolls, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie. There are also many other traditions families have; one of them is breaking the wishbone. Every chicken and turkey have a wishbone in its body. It is located at the start of the neck on a turkey where it connects to the body.

Tana S. was questioned on if she had any traditions at Thanksgiving and she said, “No, just eating food and hanging out with the family.” Her favorite food at Thanksgiving is mashed potatoes with gravy.

Olivia S. was also questioned if she had any traditions, and what her favorite food at Thanksgiving was and she said, “Yes, we go to my grandma’s, and I like stuffing and pumpkin pie.”

After the feast, some families go for walks, some take naps, and others may play cards or board games with their family. Also, some fast facts are that the first Macy’s day parade was held in 1924, Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving in 1863, and a ripe cranberry will bounce! This year is the 90th year of the Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade. Check out a ripe cranberry bouncing at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUVn11jDvtM

On the internet people are being affected by cyberbullying. It happens 24 hours a day, seven days a week on social media or text messages. Cyberbullying is a very serious problem, and it can hurt many people.

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place on electronic technology. The technology that is usually used to write the mean messages are cell phones, computers, laptops, and tablets. As well as communication tools included on social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Examples of cyberbullying are mean text messages, or rumors sent by email. Warning signs of bullying are sadness, moodiness, anxious to get out of school, or to just avoid bullying.

Kids who are cyberbullied are most likely to use alcohol and drugs, skip school, receive poor grades, and have more health problems. Cyberbullying victims are two to nine times more likely to commit suicide. A very small number of bullied kids might retaliate through extremely violent text messages. There have been 12 to 15 school shootings cases in the 2000s, and some of the shooters had a history of being cyberbullied.

Thirty eight percent of online girls are reported of being bullied compared with 26% of online boys. In particular, 41% of older girls (15-17) report being bullied more than any other age or gender age. Fifteen percent of teens on social networks have experienced someone being mean or cruel to them on a social network site. There are no statistically significant differences by age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or any other demographic characteristics. A socioeconomic status is one's economic and sociological combined total measure of an individual's or family’s and social position in relation to others. Eleven percent of middle schools girls are victims of cyberbullying in the past two months. Fifteen percent of surveyed seventh through twelfth graders have admitted that they have cyberbullied someone. Only one out of ten victims will tell a parent or a trusted adult about their abuse.

Cyberbullying is different because the messages and images can be posted anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide audience. It can be different from verbal or physical bullying because the bully is anonymous. It can also be difficult or sometimes impossible to track the source. After posting inappropriate, harassing messages, texts, or pictures, it is extremely difficult to delete them after they have been posted or sent.

Cyberbullying can hurt many people.

Daylight Saving Time

By: Makenna W. & Savannah H.

Ever wonder about why some people turn their clocks forward an hour in spring and back an hour in fall? Most people do this to make better use of daylight. Some people do this every second Sunday in March at 2:00 a.m, and the first Sunday in November at 2:00 a.m.

There is many information about changing our clocks. In the United States, all time zones switch at a different time, and in the European Union all time zone changes at the same moment. Change in clocks help keep the hours of daylight coordinated with the time that most people are active. Also, the firefighters say that every time the clock changes, they recommend to change the batteries in smoke detectors.

Many people ask why we change our clocks. In July of 1908, Thunder Bay, in Ontario, Canada became the first location to use Daylight Saving Time. The idea of Daylight Saving Time was made by Benjamin Franklin. Some people used Daylight Saving Time to save on candle wax. Daylight Saving Time did not become a standard practice in the United States until 1966. It was originally instituted in the U.S during WWI and WWII to make better use of daylight hours and save energy for war production. After the war, some states decided to continue observing Daylight Saving Time (DST).

Most of the places in United States change the time, but some regions do not. Hawaii, Arizona, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa are the only places in the United States that do not observe Daylight Saving Time.

Daylight Saving Time can affect many people’s lives.

Veterans Day

By: Michael L. & Landon B.

Veterans Day is celebrated to honor the veterans that served to protect our country. This decision was made on November 11, 1918 after WWI. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, but after WWII it was changed to Veterans Day. This holiday is celebrated in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and Malta. This holiday was made when the signing of Armistice ended the war between the Allied Nations and Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria or the Central Powers in WWI. On Veterans Day, the flag is half mast, there are parades, and church services happen in many places across the United States. There may be a two minute silence at 11a.m. on Veterans Day.

There are approximately 23.2 million veterans here in the United States. Seven million veterans served in the Vietnam War (1964-1975), 2.6 million veterans served in WWII, 2.8 million veterans served in the Korean War (1950-1953), and 5.2 million veterans served in the Gulf War, (1990-1991). Across five states there is 7.5 million veterans. The states are California with 2.1 million, Florida and Texas with 1.7 million, New York and Pennsylvania with one million veterans. Only 1.8 million veterans are women. 9.2 million veterans are over the age of 65, while only 1.9 million veterans are under the age of 35.

On November 11, around 40 stores and restaurants across Northern Ohio thanked

the United States military for their service, and for protecting their country by giving them free meals, free admission and special discounts. Some restaurants that do this are Bar Louie, Bob Evans, Buffalo Wild Wings, California Pizza Kitchen, Chipotle, CP’s Cooler, Cracker Barrel, Denny’s, Friendly’s, Golden Corral, Hooters, IHOP, Olive Garden, Panera Bread, Red Robin, Spaghetti warehouse restaurants, and Stir Crazy Fresh Asian Grill. They can also go to the Akron Zoo, Cleveland Cavaliers games, Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village, JACK Cleveland Casino, Gordmans, Great Clips, Hard Rock Rocksino, Northfield park, JC Penney all for free admission, and discounts.

Many soldiers died in past wars; also the people of their home country honor them on this day for the sacrifice they gave to their country.
