1.  sanctuaries = human-made places of safety and protection

Example:  Animals in sanctuaries are kept safe from predators.

2.  diminished = shrank, became smaller or fewer

Example:  In some habitats, the amount of animals has diminished over the years due to hunting, pollution, and other threats.

3.  thrive = to do well or be successful; to grow

Example:  Making healthy choices will help you to thrive.

4.  unfettered = not limited; not restricted

Example:  Some pets like to be unfettered; they do not like it when they have to be on a leash.

5.  cooperate = to work together; to participate in a shared activity

Example:  I love it when the students in my class cooperate with each other as well as with me!
