Late April 2016

At the end of April, Ms. Theisen and several Royle students performed at the Connecticut Music Educators Association conference in HARTFORD! On Thursday, April 28, five Royle students performed in a session led by Mr. Rick Sadlon to showcase the Darien Young Composers program! That included Ava F., who wrote an original 'pop' song, accompanied by Ms. T., and a 4-piece band called "The Revolts" (Mercer, Miller, Cameron and Bobby - all 5th Graders), who performed an original alternative rock/rap tune. Also performing on that program were students from Tokeneke, Ox Ridge, Holmes, Hindley, MMS and DHS! On Friday, April 29, four Royle fifth graders sang in the CMEA Elementary All-State Honors Chorus, conducted by Cristi Cary Miller and accompanied by Royle's own Ms. Theisen! The honors choir was made up of about 300 students in grades 4-6 from over 80 schools in the state of Connecticut. They performed a concert to a standing-room-only crowd that same afternoon. While we were at the conference, our students also had a chance to say hello to the good people at Quaver Music! Here are some videos and photos from our trip to the CMEA state conference!

April 2016

We rang in the month of April with a 70 degree day (no foolin') and then snow overnight two days later. We also sang at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers hockey game on April 3rd! Check out the video of the Royle Minstrels singing with the choirs from Hindley, Holmes, Ox Ridge, and Tokeneke!

January 2016:

The fifth grade classes are having UKULELE PLAY DATES with the kindergarten classes between January 15 and 22. This is a chance for the 'big kids' to play 9 or 10 songs on the ukulele while the 'little kids' sing along and do the actions for the songs. The big kids are also teach the little kids how to hold and strum the ukulele on the C Chord and the kindergarteners get to play the ukulele with the song Ring Around the Rosie! For more info, go to the 5th Grade tab on this blog. Videos will be posted there!

COMING UP THIS WEEK: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30th at 2:00 PM: KINDERGARTEN HALLOWEEN PARADE AND CONCERT!

Please join us outside near the garden for the Kindergarten performance! They will be singing our Hello Songs, the Royle School Song, Scary Animals, I'm a Little Ghost, Pumpkin on the Ground, the "Music ABC" song, I Can't Wait 'til it's Halloween, and Five Little Pumpkins.

One of the most exciting things for a music teacher is to see your students begin to make connections from one piece of music to another. That 'lightbulb' went off last week when many of the classes realized that the song "Scary Animals" (by Obie Leff)

originated from Symphony Number 1 by Gustav Mahler! The looks on the students' faces when they realized that 'Scary Animals' was also the theme in the symphony was just priceless. Then we started making connections between "Happy Birthday" and "Good Morning to You," as well as "Twinkle," "ABC Song," and "Baa Baa Black Sheep."

Here is a video from our FIRST FRIDAY opening assembly for grades 1-5! This features all of the students singing the SCHOOL SONG twice!

Sept. 11: A 2nd Grade Class playing a song on the Orff Instruments (Xylophones, Metallophones and Glockenspiels):

A fourth grade class having a blast with a cup game while singing "Parlez-vous francais:"

Here is a short video from our first MINSTRELS rehearsal on September 10th, 2015. We present the SCHOOL SONG:

Sept. 3rd: This is a 3rd grade class working on note-reading using a 2-line staff with color-coded note heads. "Do" is Red. "Re" is orange. "Mi" is Yellow. (The orange and yellow colors look slightly different in this video. Sorry!)

Grades 1-5 assembled in the COMMON ROOM on the FIRST FRIDAY of school:

Look what Miss Theisen made! It's a new learning item we will have in the music room as of September 24th! Mega Blocks to create rhythms!
