2013-2014

Wednesday, April 30th was the INTERNATIONAL DAY OF JAZZ! We celebrated in music classes at Royle by singing the tune "C JAM BLUES" (which students had learned earlier in April). We created some words to go along with this tune, which is usually only 'instrumental.' Students watched part of an Oscar Peterson video of C JAM BLUES. Mr Peterson was one of the best - or maybe even THE BEST - jazz pianists who ever lived. If you'd like to watch the video at home, here is the link.

UPCOMING ROYLE MUSIC DEPARTMENT DATES:

Wednesday, May 14: Royle School Spring Concert, 7PM at Darien H.S., featuring The Minstrels, 4th Grade Band, 5th Grade Band, 3rd Grade Strings, 4th and 5th Grade Orchestra. CHOIR STUDENTS need to arrive at DHS by 6;15pm for a brief warmup. BAND and ORCHESTRA students will warmup at 6:30. This concert is free and open to the general public. Please invite your friends and family :)

NOTE: There will be a rehearsal that same afternoon from 1-3pm. Students will be transported by bus to the H.S. before 1pm and will need to be PICKED UP BY PARENTS at the High School at 3:00 PM. Please see the MINSTRELS page for more info.

THURSDAY, June 5 - 1:40 PM. Ms. Tiani's 4th Grade invites their PARENTS to join us for an in-class music 'share' in the MUSIC PORTABLE. We will be singing, playing recorders, and performing on the Orff Instruments (xylophones/metallophones/etc). Forms were sent home with the students at the beginning of MAY. MONDAY, JUNE 9, 2:00 PM. Second Grade Musical: "Everybody Smiles in the Same Language." All of the second grade classes will combine to put on a 'show' that involves all of the components of 'broadway' - singing, dancing and acting! The program is open to parents and family members.

TUESDAY, JUNE 10, 2:00 PM. First Grade Musical: All four of the first grade classes will combine together to put on a 'show' that involves singing, playing, dancing and acting: "Sing Me a Story." The program is open to parents and family members.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 1:30 PM. Kindergarten Spring Music Show. All four of the kindergarten classes will join together to perform a variety of favorite songs from throughout the year, including some favorites from the Halloween and Valentine Programs, as well as other pieces from music class. The program is open to parents and family members. Songs include: The Hello Song, School Song, Five Little Pumpkins, Skinnamarink, You Are My Sunshine, The Alphabet Song, Yankee Doodle, When You Eat a Chocolate Bunny, Summer Vacation, and Mr. Sun.

YOUNG COMPOSERS: Congratulations to Royle Students Hannah Gunn and Patrick Thurlow for their performances of their original compositions at the DARIEN YOUNG COMPOSERS concert on Monday, April 7 at DHS!

The ROYLE MINSTRELS will be singing the NATIONAL ANTHEM at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers game on Sunday, March 16. For more info, please visit the MINSTRELS page :)

ALL of the music classes have been exploring a variety of percussion instruments lately, including shekere, djembe, hand drum, bass drum, maracas, rhythm sticks, claves, boomwhackers and tambourines.

The KINDERGARTEN Valentine's Program took place on Friday, February 14th at 11:15 am in the COMMON ROOM. All four kindergarten classes combined to perform six songs for their families! Click on the KINDERGARTEN page of this blog for some videos from class.

The ROYLE MINSTRELS performed at the ALL-TOWN CHORAL FESTIVAL on February 26 at Darien High School. MINSTRELS rehearses every Thursday at 7:30 AM and is open to all 4th and 5th graders! Please click on the MINSTRELS PAGE for more information!
