Students can earn an IB Certificate for each IB course taken. The number of IB courses a student takes depends on different variables. Should a student take one, two, three, four, or five IB courses, the student is categorized as being an IB Certificate Certificate Candidate.
Should a student take six IB courses, the student is categorized as being an IB Full Diploma Candidate.
It is important to note: students taking six IB courses (students categorized as being IB Full Diploma Candidates) are also required to complete three additional components of the IB Diploma. These three additional components are referred to as the IB Core Components; the three additional components are: EE (Extended Essay, CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), and TOK (Theory Of Knowledge).
Below is a brief comparison between IB Certificate Candidates and IB Full Diploma Candidates:
IB CERTIFICATE CANDIDATES
Students can take anywhere from 1 to 5 IB Courses (SL or HL)
IB FULL DIPLOMA CANDIDATES
Students must be enrolled in 6 IB Courses (3 HL and 3 SL)
Students must complete the CAS requirements
Students must complete an Extended Essay
Students must complete the IB TOK requirements

It is extremely important students communicate with their parents, teacher(s), counselor(s), and administrator(s) if the load that comes with being an IB Full Diploma Candidate is not in your best interests. Moving into the IB Certificate Program is sometimes a very logical and / or healthy move.
