THE NATURE OF CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE
“...if you believe in something, you must not just think or talk or write, but must act.”
Peterson (2003)
Creativity, action, service (CAS) is at the heart of the Diploma Programme. It is one of the three essential elements in every student’s Diploma Programme (DP) experience. It involves students in a range of activities or experiences alongside their academic studies throughout the DP.
CAS should involve:
real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes
personal challenge--tasks must extend the student and be achievable in scope
thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, reporting
reflection on outcomes and personal learning.
The three strands of CAS, which are often interwoven with particular activities, are characterized as follows:
Creativity: exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance.
Activity: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
Service: collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need.
