Full IB Diploma Candidates need to reference the IB Hexagon - which has 6 Groups. Generally speaking, Full Diploma Candidates are required to take one course from each group. Students must have 3 HL courses and 3 SL courses. The Group Two component can be replaced with a 2nd course taken in Group One. The Group Six component is fulfilled by taking either Visual Arts or an elective; your elective choices are: Psychology, French ab initio, or a 2nd IB Science course. Group One: a minimum of one course is required. Many students at AST take 2 Group One courses (English and Spanish). When this is done, the student is not mandated to take a Group Two course.
Group Two: one course can be taken, but if a student has 2 Group One courses the requirement to take a Group Two course (see above) is no longer mandatory. At AST, students who are not fluent in both Spanish and English often take Spanish B HL or Spanish ab initio SL or French ab initio to meet the Group Two requirement. For students who take two Group One courses (Spanish HL and English HL) French ab initio SL can be be taken to meet the requirement for Group Six.
Group Three: students can take either History HL or Business HL – not both. Psychology SL can be taken as an elective; Psychology can also be taken by students in Biology HL to meet the requirement for Group Three (instead of History HL or Business HL).
Group Four: students can take up to two of the following IB science courses: Biology SL, Chemistry SL, Physics SL, or Biology HL; the 2nd course would meet the requirement for Group Six. However, students taking IB Biology HL are not positioned to take IB Physics as a 2nd IB science course.
Group Five: the student can take either Math Application and Interpretation SL or Math Analysis and Approaches SL.
Group Six: students can take either Visual Arts or an elective; your elective choices are: Psychology, French ab initio, or a 2nd IB Science course.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Students can take only one of the following courses due to scheduling conflicts: French SL, Chemistry SL, Psychology SL, or Art SL. There is one exception; students can take both Psychology SL and Chemistry SL. Also, Students can take two IB Science class; however, students cannot take both IB Physics and IB Biology SL or Biology HL.
Students earning the Honduran Bacheillerato Diploma (all Honduran citizens) cannot take both IB Business Management HL and IB History of the Americas HL.
Students who take IB Chemistry cannot take 11th grade Computer Science Principals: the curriculum includes, but is not limited to the following topics: Computer Coding - using Python computer programming language, and Analyzing large data samples. Students will still take 12th Grade Computer Science; there is not gap between these two Computer courses, as the learning outcomes are not linear or related.
