Remaining in an IB course, while not testing with the IB Organization

For IB Certificate Candidates:

If a student meets all requirements to remain in an IB course through both semesters in 11th grade and semester one of 12th grade, they may be provided the option to remain in the IB course during their final semester of 12th grade, but not be assessed by the IB Organization. All IB work would still be required to be submitted to the subject teacher - as part of their semester two grade. There would be no IB exams, though.

With this path, it is necessary to have a written agreement signed by the parent(s) and the student - that indicates they understand there will be no IB results for that specific IB course. If a university is expecting to see the IB results, this path is not advantageous.

If a student decides to take this path after January 14th of that assessment year, the student will be responsible to reimburse the fee that AST paid for the student to be assessed by IB for that course.

This would also be true (the student would be responsible for reimbursing the fee that AST paid for the student to be assessed by IB) if a student stops meeting the expectations for the IB course after January 14th of that assessment year; the student would be allowed to remain in the IB course, but would not be assessed by The IB Organization; thus, there would be no IB results for that IB course.

Additionally, please know letters of recommendation that are sent to universities can be changed up to June of the year in which a student graduates; this is another possible outcome if a student decides the rigor of an IB course is too much in semester two of their senior year.

For IB Full Diploma Candidates:

Students do not have this option; however, if a student stops meeting the expectations to remain in an IB course and it is determined (after January 14th of that assessment year) that removal from an IB course is necessary, the student will be responsible to reimburse the fee that AST paid for the student to be assessed by IB for that course and to additionally pay the fee that AST would incur due to change the student’s IB Category from IB Full Diploma Candidate to IB Certificate Candidate.
