Amelia Callam was in the Pioneer Class of 2007. As a freshman and sophomore, she sang in Bel Canto, and was prepared to sing in A Cappella as a junior. In 2005, prior to her junior year, Amelia was diagnosed with cancer and spent the year in treatment. In 2006, with her cancer in remission, Amelia returned to Pioneer and registered for her senior year at choir camp. By August 2006, when camp began, Amelia's cancer had returned. Nonetheless, she attended camp, participated fully, and sang with the Pioneer Choirs for the final time. Amelia Callam died later that year in December 2006.
Amelia's concern for others, courage, joy, persistence, and a desire to refrain from being the center of attention are characteristics to be admisred and celebrated. The Pioneer Choir Class of 2007 established the Unsung Senior Award to celebrate Amelia's life and recognize future Pioneer Choir members who embody her spirit. The award is announced at the final campfire every August.
