The Ann Arbor Pioneer High School A Cappella Choir is an auditioned, advanced mixed choir, grades 10-12. The A Cappella Choir has been selected to perform at the American Choral Directors Association Central Division Convention (2014), American Choral Directors Association Michigan State Convention (2014, 2018, 2022, 2024), Michigan Music Conference (2013, 2018, 2020, 2023), and the Michigan Youth Arts Festival (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019, 2022, 2023). In 2023, 2022, 2019, 2015, and 2014, they were selected by MSVMA as the Outstanding Choir in the state of Michigan, and performed at the Gala Concert of the Michigan Youth Arts Festival and All-State Festival. The A Cappella Choir has collaborated with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings on several occasions, including performances of Mozart's Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, and Borodin's Polovtsian Dances.
Students will study music written for mixed voices in four to eight parts from a variety of musical time periods and styles. Prospective members must display advanced music-reading skills, vocal technique, rehearsal technique, and initiative. All members of A Cappella participate in District and State Solo and Ensemble Festival and are other vocal music activities, such as Regional Honors Choir or Michigan Youth Ensembles.
