Prior to 1970, music classes were prohibited from travel, other than to professional conferences, by the Ann Arbor School Board in keeping with guidelines of the National Association for Music Education. Between 1970-80, those restrictions were eased and many of the Ann Arbor Public School's performing organizations have traveled both out of the state and out of the country since that time.

The following apply to travel by members of the Pioneer Choirs:

  • We travel to enhance our learning; sight seeing and other activities are secondary to singing.

  • Travel will not require fund raising activities for those not choosing to travel or for those who choose other means to pay for their travel.

  • Travel will be available to all members of the Pioneer Choirs with the understanding that any tour group must be balanced in relation to the music to be performed.

  • Those who choose not to travel will not be excluded from any normal class activities.

  • Approximately one chaperone for every ten students traveling will accompany the group, not counting the accompanist and conductor.

  • Chaperones will be responsible for students at all times.

  • All local school rules apply to the tour group while on tour.

  • The group traveling must be able to perform consistent with the standards of the Pioneer Choirs.
