Steven R. Lorenz, Director of Choirs
Steven Lorenz is director of choirs at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, where he directs five curricular choirs and oversees five extra-curricular choirs. Mr. Lorenz is also the music director and conductor of the 90-voice community men's chorus, Measure for Measure: A Men’s Choral Society, based in Ypsilanti. For the past twenty-one summers, Mr. Lorenz has served on the conducting faculty at the Interlochen Arts Camp, directing the Intermediate Classical Voice program.
Choirs prepared by Mr. Lorenz have appeared at the American Choral Directors Association Central Division Convention (2010 & 2014), American Choral Directors Association Michigan State Convention (2008, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022, & 2024), IMC: The Tenor-Bass Choral Consortium biannual Seminar (2010, 2014, 2018, & 2023), Michigan Music Conference (2009, 2010, 2013, 2018, 2020, 2023, & 2026) and Michigan Youth Arts Festival (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, & 2025). On six occasions (2014, 2015, 2019, 2022, 2023, & 2025), the Pioneer A Cappella Choir has been named an Outstanding Choir in Michigan by MSVMA, and featured at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Gala Concert. In 2015, the Pioneer A Cappella Choir was featured in Dr. Jerry Blackstone’s DVD, Did You Hear That?, produced by GIA Publishing.
Mr. Lorenz conducted the MSVMA State TTBB Honors Choir in 2025 & 2013, and has prepared choruses for the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Flint Symphony Orchestra, and Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings. Mr. Lorenz holds degrees from Michigan State University (M.M.) and Carleton College (B.A.), studying conducting with Jonathan Reed and Lawrence Burnett.
Mr. Lorenz has served on the boards of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association, Michigan Music Conference, and American Choral Directors Association and currently serves as Vice President of the IMC: The Tenor-Bass Choral Consortium.
The Pioneer Choirs have worked with clinicians and composers including Jerry Blackstone, Alice Parker, and Jake Runestad, commissioned new works by Stacey V. Gibbs, Gerald Custer, and the Michigan Choral Commission Consortium, and performed in concert alongside the Wartburg College Choir, University of Michigan University Choir, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, and Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings.
