Spring 2026 Course Access begins December 22nd • Live Classes start January 5th
Before the Conversation
Know your purpose - determine what outcome you're hoping for in the conversation. Define your goal(s).
Identify what you already know and what you don't - write down what you understand about your aid and what you don't.
Gather your information - review the resources linked on the main "Funding Your Program" page, the FAQs below, as well as any relevant recent emails or messages.
Anticipate emotions and triggers - financial conversations can be stressful. Plan a calming strategy (e.g., deep breathing) so that you can stay clear-headed.
During the Conversation
Lead with curiosity - aim to keep the conversation collaborative and to learn new information.
Take notes and reflect in real-time - jot down key terms and next steps.
Monitor your comprehension - ask yourself: "Do I understand what's being said? Can I explain it back?" If not, slow down - Financial Aid staff are used to re-explaining things and appreciate when students want to be accurate.
After the Conversation
Summarize what you learned - write a quick summary in your own words. Translating the information into your own language reinforces understanding.
Evaluate your approach - what did you do well in preparing or asking questions? What could you do differently next time to feel more confident or get clearer answers? This process can be applied to interactions with your facilitators, peers, and clients at your clinical placements too.
Follow-up - consider sending a thank-you email and summarizing key points from your conversation.
