Based on review of your previous academic records, you may be required to complete foundational courses in order to fulfill Emerson's requirements. Per academic policies, all assigned foundational courses must be completed prior to beginning Applied Graduate courses.
So that you can move through this coursework efficiently, foundational courses are offered in 7-week mini terms. Each 15-week semester has two mini terms, Mini term A and Mini term B. When registering for a single semester, you should register for courses you want to take both in Mini term A and in Mini Term B.
These courses are offered in Mini Term A (the first half of the term) each semester:
CD625 - Structures & Functions for Speech, Hearing, and Swallowing
CD626 - Language Development
CD627 - Survey of Communication Disorders Across the Lifespan
These courses are offered in Mini Term B (the second half of the term) each semester:
CD628 - Clinical Observations and Foundations
CD629 - Speech Sounds: Phonetics and Acoustics
CD630 - Foundations of Audiology
You should refer to your Intent to Enroll letter to confirm your individually assigned foundational requirements. Most students choose to take the courses over two semesters (Option A) or one semester (Option B):
If you are petitioning to have any Foundational Courses waived, please refer to this page.
With their knowledge of academic foundations and rigors, Student Success Advisors can strategically recommend a foundational plan of study based on your individually required courses. Please reach out to them via email or phone if you would like further coaching in this area.
Speech@Emerson offers two plan of study options for the Applied Graduate coursework, a 5-term track and a 9-term track. Both plan of studies are fixed tracks. Per the program’s academic policy, once a student has passed the add/drop period of their first semester of applied coursework in either plan of study, students are unable to alter their plan of study and must graduate on their chosen track.
You should consult with a Student Success Advisor to carefully and thoughtfully determine your Applied Graduate plan of study. SSAs will partner with you to ensure you are able to make the most informed decision by considering academic, personal, and other factors. Students who need to take a break or alter their program trajectory are encouraged to take a Leave of Absence. To discuss other unique circumstances, please connect with an SSA.
Due to the demands of the online program, students are not able to work full time if enrolled in the 5-term track. You may be able to work part time if enrolled in the 9-term track; however, it must be a flexible position in order to adhere to the rigorous academic and clinical requirements. For either track, it is not recommended to work while completing clinical placements since field experience requires a commitment of three to five full days per week.
This Planning Your Studies resource represents a typical breakdown of how you can expect to dedicate your time to Speech@Emerson each semester. The time spent in each semester indicates weekly time commitments. Coursework sections are estimates and may vary from student to student.
Keep in mind that the 5-term track is "consistently" intense from one term to the next with roughly the same amount of classes and a practicum each term. The 9-term track is "variably" intense with some semesters being denser than others. Different students will benefit in different ways from each of these two tracks- neither is better or worse than the other. This is a great launching point for conversation when discussing the benefits of each track with an Student Success Advisor.
Regardless of whether you choose the 9-term or 5-term track for your applied graduate coursework, you can anticipate the workload will increase in comparison to the foundational coursework. Now that you have finished foundational courses, you are applying knowledge to practice and employing more cumulative and critical thinking skills. Though applied graduate courses are 15 weeks and foundational courses are a condensed 7 weeks, you can still expect an increase in time, effort, and rigor when you transition to applied grad. More than two times the content of foundational courses is covered in the time frame of an applied grad course. Additionally, you can plan on the applied grad coursework requiring more analysis and critical thinking both during class and in assignments and homework, as these are inherent to the content that is covered.
We recommend that in the weeks prior to your first semester in applied graduate courses, you review the materials available under Student Resources to ensure you have a good grasp on techniques which will help you "step up" from foundational to applied graduate coursework expectations.
