Course access begins on 8/18/2025 and live classes begin on 9/1/2025
Completion of your master’s degree and preparation from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification requires three types of classes:
There are three separate processes to petition to have Emerson College recognize coursework taken at other institutions, depending on which type of class you are referencing. Please ensure you are scrolling to the appropriate process for the type of course you would like to petition.
You will need to fill out this form to update us on the current status of any outstanding or recently completed General Education coursework.
During the admissions process, the Admissions Committee reviews your submitted transcripts to determine which of the four required courses you have already completed. Depending on your academic history, you may be required to complete some college-level courses before beginning or concurrently with your Emerson College enrollment as required by ASHA's Prerequisite Course Content Areas Related to SLP Certification Standards. Refer to your Intent to Enroll letter to confirm whether you have been identified as lacking one or more of the required courses:
Biological Sciences
Physical Science (Physics or Chemistry)
Statistics
Social or Behavioral Science.
These courses must be completed before the end of Term 3 (5-term or 9-term) of Applied Graduate coursework in the Speech@Emerson program. Official transcripts must be submitted. Students not meeting this requirement on time will receive an account hold preventing registration for their fourth semester of Applied Graduate coursework.
It is your responsibility to identify a course at another institution that you want to take which fulfills the ASHA requirement. At this time, Emerson College graduate students cannot take electives outside of their plan of study. Since these are ASHA requirements not Emerson requirements, they cannot be taken at Emerson unless you were an Emerson undergraduate student and took them at that time.
Emerson does not retain a list of recommended or preferred courses. Items to consider when selecting an ASHA General Education course to take:
It must be completed at a regionally-accredited college or university. This includes local community colleges or online programs.
Coursework from massive open online courses (MOOCs) are not accepted. Examples of MOOCs include, but are not limited to: Educause, MOOC.org, edX, Coursera, and Khan Academy.
Classes taken at the high school level are not eligible, with the exception of advanced placement (AP) courses that appear for credit on your college/university transcript.
It may be an introductory course such as CHEM 101
A lab portion for the class is not required.
The course cannot be associated with speech-language pathology, audiology, communication sciences, hearing sciences, or logopedia unless they fulfill a university general education requirement, and are available to students who are not majoring in CSD.
If you need to take Physics or Chemistry, confirm that the course content covers only Physics or only Chemistry, not both.
If you have taken a course that may meet ASHA requirements, or you will need to take a General Education course and would like to know if it's approved, you may submit the course(s) for approval by creating a free account with Transferology (www.transferology.com) and following steps below:
Use the ‘Will my courses transfer’ button to navigate through the course offerings from the institution offering the General Education course(s). On the left side, input the required information including the school name where you are taking/took the course, the Semester/Year, and course specifics.
The ‘My Courses’ section on the right side will populate with the courses you select.
Then click ‘Search for Matches.’ (See image for reference)
The next page will provide automatic matches. You should click ‘Looking for a particular school?’
A pop up will appear in which you need to select Massachusetts and Emerson College, then click ‘View Matches.’
You will then do one of the following two things:
If the course has already been approved and is in Emerson’s system, you will see a ‘100% Match.’ Click on it:
In this scenario, you should take a screenshot of your result, indicating that the course has been identified as having met ASHA requirements by the tag ‘ASHA’ and send it to studentsuccess@speech.emerson.edu.
If the course has not yet been approved, you should click the ‘Contact the school for more information’ link
In this scenario, to submit the request to Emerson College, students MUST use the following note so that the course is approved and tagged appropriately: “I am a S@E graduate student and would like to see if this/these course(s) are approved for ASHA prerequisite requirements” within the body of the request.
Reminders
Courses are reviewed by Emerson College staff during the regular work week. The system updates daily on weekdays at midnight.
Students should login to Transferology within approximately 3 business days to check if the course is approved by ASHA.
Has your course been approved in Transferology? Take a screenshot of the results and complete this form.
If there is no update after 3 business days, you may then reach out to program_advising@emerson.edu with your SSA copied to inquire.
Once your approved course is completed with a grade of C- or above, you need to have the Official Transcript of that course sent to Emerson College for filing. Please see the How to Send Official Transcripts section for more information.
During the admissions process, the Admissions Committee reviews your submitted transcripts to determine which of the six required foundational courses you have already completed. Refer to your Intent to Enroll letter to confirm whether you have been identified as lacking one or more of the required courses:
CD625 - Structures & Functions for Speech, Hearing, and Swallowing
CD626 - Language Development
CD627 - Survey of Communication Disorders Across the Lifespan
CD628 - Clinical Observations and Foundations
CD629 - Speech Sounds: Phonetics and Acoustics (Note: This course covers two content areas: phonetics and acoustics. Students must provide evidence that they have covered both content areas before petitioning this course.)
CD630 - Foundations of Audiology

Depending on your academic history, you may be required to complete at least one of these here or at another institution prior to beginning your Applied coursework.
Emerson does not retain a list of recommended or preferred courses from other institutions. We also do not approve these courses in advance of your having completed them. We will review previously completed courses for consideration of a course waiver at Emerson College. Note the following petition requirements for a petition to waive foundational coursework:
Courses must have been completed within the past five years with a grade of B or better.
There must be an appropriate content match between completed course(s) and the Emerson course which is being petitioned. Please refer to our foundational course descriptions here.
You must have sent the Official Transcript of that course to Emerson College for filing with your records.
The course must have been completed within the past 5 years. In progress coursework will not be evaluated. Here are some examples of how to apply this 5 year policy:
If you believe you have already taken a course that may meet Emerson’s requirements above, you may petition the CSD Department for it to be considered. Please follow the process below precisely. The emails you send will be read directly into a computer system which enables the advising team to follow up. Please note that if you want to petition multiple courses, you need to send separate emails for each. It is important that the email is formatted exactly as follows:

Once you submit a petition, the submission will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Students are highly encouraged to submit petitions for foundational course waivers as early as possible.
