The researchers constructed a bacterium's "genetic software" 
and transplanted it into a host cell. The resulting microbe then 
looked and behaved like the species "dictated" by the synthetic DNA.

The advance, published in Science, has been hailed as a scientific 
landmark, but critics say there are dangers posed by synthetic

Is Dr. Venter God ?

Dr Helen Wallace from Genewatch UK, an organisation that monitors 
developments in genetic technologies, told BBC News that synthetic 
bacteria could be dangerous.

"If you release new organisms into the environment, you can do more       
harm than good," she said."By releasing them into areas of pollution, 
[with the aim of cleaning it up], you're actually releasing a new kind 
of pollution."We don't know how these organisms will behave in the 
environment." Dr Wallace accused Dr Venter of playing down the 
potential drawbacks.

The UK and northern Europe 
could be gripped by more frequent cold winters as a result of 
low solar activity, say researchers.

Europe is particularly susceptible because it lies underneath the jet stream

Jet Stream in disorder due to magnetic low or general climate change ?
This affects the dynamics of jet streams, which are very strong winds about 7-12km above the Earth's surface that can have a major influence on weather systems. There is one jet stream present in each hemisphere.

Blocking of Jet stream

"Europe is particularly susceptible because, firstly, it lies underneath the (northern hemisphere's) jet stream," he explained. A "blocking" occurs when the jet stream forms an "s" shape over the north-eastern Atlantic, causing the wind to fold back over itself. "If you haven't got blocking, then the jet stream brings the mild, wet westerly winds to give us the weather we are famous for." But, he added, if the jet stream is "blocked", and pushed further northwards, then cold, dry winds from the east flow over Europe, resulting in a sharp fall in temperatures. "This... 'blocking' does seem to be one of the things that can be modulated by solar activity," he said.

UV Radiation levels

The way in which solar activity affects the behaviour of blocking episodes is linked to the amount of ultraviolet (UV) emissions being produced by the Sun. 

Solar UV heats the stratosphere (20-50km above the surface), particularly the equatorial stratosphere. This results in a temperature gradient, which leads to the formation of high level winds.

Comment:

The depletion of the Ozone layer over years, or the Ozone hole, 

means less heating up by UV of the upper Stratosphere 

(UV radiation reaches the Ocean and glaciers through the ozone hole, shock heating them) This results in a lower temperature gradient, which leads to the formation of less high level winds.

Worth thinking about this possible cause of cold winters, less Jet stream by Ozone hole

Sun block shield anti-UV for Glacier

1.5 meters of Ice saved......

The 'sun block' is a new development with a UV shield on one side and an anti-condensation interior to avoid the negative effect of water collecting on the glacier. The installation took two days to secure the 50 metre strips out over the glacier.

The initial reports look promising, whilst investment costs are high, reports of up to 1.5 meters of glacier has been saved. However the protective sheet is only covering 1/100 th of the total surface area of the glacier; some might say it's the tip of the iceberg.

      Black surface from Diesel Sooth/soot acts as heat trap melts glacier faster

     Previous attempts of blanketing glaciers have not been so successful - Tignes installed a sheet on the   glacier du Grand Motte. The material that was used attracted lots of dirt making the white sheet turn black. This meant that the sheet actually acted as a heat trap and accelerated the melting of the glacier.
