New Kit from People PowerOSHAN (Open Source Home Area Network)

Quick Take: We’ve been saying for a while that it’s all about the platform. Just recently we wrote about Google opening up its PowerMeter API. Now People Power has offered up an open source kit so developers can build any number of things including Smart Grid devices in thehome energy management space. We expect to see more of this open sourcing – but it will eventually come down to who wins the recruitment war.

In announcing its $149.95 SuRF Developer’s Kit for OSHAN (Open Source Home Area Network), People Power founder and CEO Gene Wang said the idea is “if you can dream it, you can now build it into your home.” SuRF is both a hardware and software developer’s kit for wireless sensor networking with an open source operating system that can be used for creating household Smart Grid devices.
