The leaders of the Group of Eight (G8)

industrial economies have pledged 5 billion dollars, while non-members such as New Zealand, Norway and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged a further 2.3 billion dollars, Mr. Harper said. Canada and U.S. to give $1bn each.

The infant mortality rates are higher in developing countries. The reasons for these higher rates are that developing countries often have

    • A shortage of medical services

    • A greater number of children born to mothers

    • Poor nutrition of mothers and babies

    • Less knowledge of health matters

    • Dirty water supplies

o Reduce 3/4th mother mortality (during birth giving?)

The G8 members are

Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States, with the European Union as a permanent observer.

The larger Group of 20 (G20) bloc,

which includes emerging economies, will meet over the weekend in Toronto.
