Affleck Park

The pioneer trail goes through the park and could be used for hiking or biking. You could drop off bikers at Big Mountain pass and let them ride down the trail to camp or from camp down to Dell Reservoir. See http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/trails/mormon2.htm . Also see more detail on the trail where it goes through camp on the map below and on their site.

Here is a source of historical information on the area: http://mormontrails.org/Tours/Emigration/primaryroute.htm.

The 2016 Affleck Park Campsite Reservation Season is May 27th – October 31st. Affleck Park campsite reservations begin Monday, March 7 by telephone and online at 8 am.

This is a nice little pay campground that is fairly unknown. There isn't any water, but they have picnic tables and latrines. It is owned by Salt Lake City and run by the water shed people. It is gated with a combination lock and you have to make reservations several days or more ahead by calling Vickie Baer at 801-483-6705 during business hours or on line at http://slcgov.maxgalaxy.net/Campground.aspx?GUID=231ad270-1301-4099-9c6e-dfeb71c32670 or www.keepitpure.com . They will email you the lock combination for that week.

The park is on highway 65 between Little Dell Reservoir and East Canyon. Head east on I80 from Salt Lake City and take exit 134 (East Canyon exit) and head north for about 5 miles. Look for a pull-off with a gate on the west side of the road. It closes in the winter when UDOT closes the road. The cost is $15 per site which is for a maximum of 8 people and 2 vehicles. I did see sites with more than eight people and more than two cars; I doubt anyone checks. I also saw cars parked along the highway. There is a large parking space just up from the turnoff. There are 12 sites individual sites and a couple group areas (but they are $100).

Here is a description of the individual sites. If you want two sites together try 32-33 or 34-35.

Sites 11-15 are closer to the highway and will have some highway noise

11 - fairly large can fit about 3 tents. It is more isolated.

12 - can only fit about 1 tent

13 - nice large area, about 4 tents but less trees

14 - can probably fit 3 tents but not very level

15 - has 4 tables, but only room for a couple tents, it not very private

31 - has two tables (one for a wheel chair), can fit about 4 tents and is not by other sites, but the eating area is tight

32 - nice site, can fit about 4 tents. But close to 33

33 - can fit about 2 tents

34 - nice site, can fit about 3 tents, close to 35

35 - can fit about 2 tents

36 - can fit 2 or 3 tents but only one site is real level

37 - can only fit one tent

My favorite are 32, 34, 11,13, in that order

Sites 21-25 and 41-44 are group sites. You need to call for reservations for these sites.

No dogs are allowed and you need to bring your own firewood. They don't allow gathering of firewood in the campground.
