Prairie Schooners

Saint Paul, 15 January 2004

Sunflowers behold your antecedents

Like a congregation of witnesses

Whispers heard above a windstorm

Voices filter through wind-bent grass

Like earthen shards of genetic vessels

Listing like the windmill’s dangling vane

Waves of evaporative binary return

To the cosmos like weary sightseers

Waving from prairie schooners

Streaming past your narrative

The bleached sheets of un-fetched laundry

Blinded by the South Dakota sun
