Lamberta Occultation 12/19/07
Members of BAS have an opportunity to help refine knowledge about the size, shape and orbit of an 80 mile diameter asteroid named Lamberta. Paul Maley, Executive Vice President of the International Occultation Timing Association (IOTA), will travel to Bartlesville from Houston on December 19, 2007 to time an occultation of 9.4 magnitude star TYC 2416-00772-1 in Auriga. The center line of the asteroid’s “shadow path” passes just north Bartlesville. With enough observers positioned across this path the asteroid’s profile can be refined significantly. Negative observations, or “misses,” are just as important for improving the asteroid’s orbital elements and possibly the position of the star.
