June 2012

The June BAS meeting was an informal one sandwiched in between two major club efforts; our club booth at SunFest 2012 and our public Venus Transit viewing experience on Tuesday, June 5th. The main purpose for the meeting was to discuss how the club members would handle transferring many of the duties that were being done by John Grismore. Discussion included a brief treasurer’s report, our successful SunFest participation and the plans for our public transit viewing.

Treasurer’s Report: May, 2012

Beginning Balance - 5/1/12: $1294.16

No activity for May, 2012

Ending Balance - 5/31/12: $1294.16

SunFest 2012 Booth

We had some very good interest in our booth this year, similar to last year. Steve Plank organized it and seven of us manned the booth during the three days. Seventy five people signed up as interested and provided us with email addresses or phone numbers. Steve had received some neat 3D photos of the sun from the Night Sky Network and we handed out one of those to everyone who signed up. Jennifer Walker organized the signup list from the booth and sent copies of it to the officers.

Venus Transit June 5, 2012

Arden discussed the plans for the public viewing session to take place at the East Side Arvest Bank. Plans were for club participants providing telescopes or viewing aids to begin gathering shortly after 4pm so everyone would be ready for the big event which would begin about 5:05pm. Daryl brought along two different types of solar filter films he had to donate to club members who wanted to make a filter for their own scopes. Daryl also discussed his plans to set up at a friends country home south near Ocheleta to photograph the Venus/Sun encounter.

July 2012 Program

Rick Bryant kindly volunteered to organize his pictures he took of the May annular eclipse of the Sun and discuss his viewing expedition to the wilds of New Mexico for our program at our July 2nd meeting. We also expect to have some pictures of the Venus transit from various people and a report on the public viewing.
