Mr J. Fragale Computer Engineering Classes

This semester, the Grade 10 Computer Engineering students are adding a new addition to the courses arsenal of robots. They are prepping to build an autonomous, obstacle avoiding robot. At the heart of it, a PIC microcontroller coupled with an ultrasonic distance sensor, which uses the properties of sound to accurately measure distance. The sensor emits a high frequency sound which, when it encounters an object, reflects off of the object and back to the sensor. By measuring the time it takes for the echo to return to the sensor and taking into account the speed of sound, the microcontroller reads in the round trip duration from the sensor and converts the raw data into a distance in centimeters. A servo is attached to the ultrasonic sensor, and when an obstacle is detected in front of the sensor, the servo sweeps from left to right to center position, taking a distance measurement at each position. The microcontroller compares these values, then calculates the path of least obstruction, after which it commands the robots’ motors to move the robot accordingly. Students will add additional features to their bots, such as sound and lights. They are currently learning about the basics of series and parallel circuits, and how to program their microcontrollers to read inputs and drive outputs.

YEARBOOK Class TGJ4M2 & AWS4M2 (2 credit course)

The 2018/2019 Yearbooks are here! They were distributed to all HOMEROOM classes on Monday September 30, 2019 on HOMECOMING DAY! Look for HP Reveal videos embedded on the pages, courtesy of the Video Club!!!!

DIGITAL 40 is a project where the YEARBOOK students take hundreds of pictures (there are many categories that they need to adhere to) and must formally present their pictures to the class in a powerpoint presentation. It is a chance for these students to develop their photography portfolio and learn how to use the camera to take pictures for the yearbook. Here are some amazing portfolio worthy samples we will try to enter in April 2020: Jostens Photography Contest!

On October 17th, 2019, the students, along with the Yearbook Journalists went down to Ryerson University for the NOW JOURNALISM conference was held. This is where a variety of workshops was offered on campus for High School students who are interested in journalism, graphic design and other related fields. Students were able to meet Industry experts and share current work and receive feedback.

Grade 10 Design Tech Class TDJ 2O1a

The Grade 10 Tech Design class has been learning about isometric drawings along with orthographic projections. We are learning machine safety and the students are designing personal Catholic Plaques.

Grade 12 ComTech Class TGJ 4O1a

The Grade 12 Comtech class has been learning about the Principles and Elements of Design. They had to create collages to express these rules about Design. These students have also designed their Family Christmas cards and their poster submissions to the Ready Set Create poster contest. Congratulations to last year’s winners from our school who came in the top 10 poster entries: Yan Barron & Celeste Brizuela! Their posters are featured on the Contests’s Press Flyer that are mass produced for all PUBLIC and CATHOLIC schools around York Region. Good luck to Mrs. Gudelj’s Grade 12 students!
