SEASONS GREETINGS from the Superintendent
After a year like no other, I am even more grateful for the amazing endurance and commitment displayed by our staff and students since our return in September. As we reflect on the year behind us in preparation for the year to come, I ask that everyone pause and consider this year’s ...
Holiday Recess Homework Assignment
REMEMBER to find time to focus on your health and the well-being of those around you.
CHERISH each moment spent with your loved ones and find time to laugh … a lot!
GIVE THANKS for all that you have. It’s easy to get caught up in what we missed this year, but there are still plenty of good memories we can look back on.
On behalf of the Board of Education and all the administrators of Westwood Regional School District, we want to wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season.
A Message from
the Bergen County Department of Health Services
The holiday season is often a time of year for social activities, holiday shopping, and quality time with loved ones. This year, however, COVID-19 may make many of those activities more difficult. Keeping up with everything, staying positive and — especially in 2020 — safely socializing can be overwhelming. Click HERE for tips on preparing for the holidays and prioritizing your mental health in the coming weeks.

Westwood Regional School District is proud to be partnering once more with the non-profit YouthTruth to gather feedback from parents/guardians, staff, and students in grades 6-12. The upcoming anonymous feedback surveys will ask questions on topics like engagement, relationships, and culture. We look forward to learning directly from our community about what is working well at our schools and how we can improve, so that we can continue to enhance learning for all students. This year's survey will include additional questions aligned to our district goals regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as items related to hybrid and remote learning.
Between January 4-22, 2021, grades 6-12 students will take the brief online survey during a designated class period, staff members will take the survey during a Monday meeting, and parents and guardians will receive an invitation via email to provide their feedback via the online survey.
The December 17 Board of Education meeting featured updates, performances, and recognitions. The Westwood Regional High School Music Department shared an audio student performance of a variety of seasonal favorites to put everyone in the holiday spirit.

CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
The district is in its first year of implementing i-Ready, a diagnostic and instruction program that is directly correlated to the New Jersey Department of Education's Student Learning Standards (NJSLS). i-Ready provides our teachers with important information on students' mastery of required grade-level skills. It offers teachers accurate, actionable data to help them guide their students toward continued growth.
Here are some questions parents/guardians may be asking:
In which grades are we using the i-Ready product? Are all students getting the same experience?
Students in grades 1 - 5 are engaged in i-Ready's personalized instruction; lessons are targeted to each individual’s strengths and needs. This is not a one-size-fits-all product. This is not testing for the sake of testing.
How are the lessons for my child determined?
Each student’s personalized instruction is based on his or her diagnostic performances. i-Ready pinpoints students' strengths and knowledge gaps at the sub-skill level.
When is the second of the three diagnostic tests?
The mid-year diagnostic assessment will be administered in the middle of January.
How much time is my child spending on the iReady lessons?
The time between the three i-Ready diagnostic assessments is where the learning and growth happens! Students are spending 30 minutes a week per subject on personalized instruction in reading and mathematics. Teachers in each class are monitoring student progress and have continuous, real-time data and insights into student learning. i-Ready is not being assigned for homework.
How is iReady helping my child?
Through this monitoring, teachers are able to provide meaningful support to ensure academic growth. Personalized instruction allows for differentiation to meet the diverse needs of our students. Lessons are aligned to the NJSLS, which they are learning in their daily lessons. The instructional data can provide guidance for grouping students by common areas of strength and need, addressing individual students’ underlying skill gaps, and providing strategic instruction on specific skills. Most importantly, i-Ready measures the grade-level skills the New Jersey Department of Education requires us to teach.
Why does my child's score seem low?
The beginning of the year assessment tests students on content for the current grade level, which they may or may not have mastered.
Click here for a video that explains personalized instruction and how families can support students with i-Ready. For additional information, please contact your child’s teacher, principal, or Elementary Curriculum Coordinator Kelly Hughes at kelly.hughes@wwrsd.org.
