A monthly e-newsletter to keep you connected to your District
Many people often tell me that being on the Board of Education is a thankless job, but during this time of year, I find many things for which I am thankful.
So, on behalf of the Board of Education I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
Warm wishes,
Sue Swietkowski
Successfully transitioning the eighth grade from the Jr./Sr. High School to the Middle School requires more than just construction of the physical space needed to accommodate additional students and staff. The district has been hard at work developing plans and proposals to implement an educational programs that meets the distinct developmental needs of students in Middle School. Here's a quick update to the most common questions about our path to opening the Grades 6-8 Middle School.
Since the inception of the referendum, September 2020 was set as the target opening date for the Middle School. It is an aggressive timeline, but we’ve continued to operate with that target in mind. Within the next month, we will need to make a final decision whether we will be able to meet that target based upon input from our administration, architect, construction management company and the contractor. The decision will be based upon whether we can provide a Middle School educational program that can effectively accommodate the staff and students safely and securely while meeting their academic and social-emotional needs. While the desire is to be completely done by the time we open, we may be able to open the newly added spaces while the renovated spaces approach completion. Keep in mind that the renovation of existing spaces cannot and will not begin until the summer when school is not in session. And of course, we must be able to obtain the required certificates of occupancy and confirmation that our health and safety systems are in place.
If we are unable to successfully make the transition in September 2020, then we would have to wait until the September 2021 to officially move the eighth grade to the Middle School.
With September 2020 less than a year away, hours and days of planning have taken place and continues to do so to prepare for a Grades 6-8 Middle School and a Grades 9-12 High School. In general, the administration works together to build plans based on needs and priorities. Over time, draft proposals are shared with the Board of Education and discussed in Committee when possible. After proposals are shared publicly, feedback from the school community is considered and final decisions are made through formal Board resolution and adoptions of budgets as needed. Some of those plans are as follows:

Westwood Regional School District is proud to be partnering with the non-profit YouthTruth to gather feedback from parents/guardians, staff, and students in grades 6-12. The upcoming anonymous feedback surveys will ask questions on topics like engagement, relationships, and culture. We look forward to learning directly from our community about what is working well at our schools and how we can improve, so that we can continue to enhance learning for all students.
Between January 21st – 31st 2020, grades 6-12 students will take the online survey, staff members will take the survey during a staff meeting, and parents and guardians will receive an invitation via email to provide their feedback via the online survey. Stay tuned for more information, and if you have any questions in the meantime, please contact ray.gonzalez@wwrsd.org.
Please review our annual inclement weather procedures posting to familiarize yourself with the types of changes that may occur during an inclement weather event.
Please remember that all school districts make the best decision based on the information available at that time. Since we share transportation routes with other districts in the Pascack Valley, many variables are considered when determining the status of the school day. Decisions are rarely clear-cut, consider the road conditions in both municipalities, and often must be made with inconsistent weather reports that are changing up until the morning of a school day.
We are looking forward to a dry winter (or at least snow on the weekends). In the meantime ... stay warm and safe travels.
