January 2019

a note from the Superintendent

A number of people have inquired about the upcoming screening of www.screenagersmovie.com scheduled to take place this Tuesday, February 5, at 6:30 PM at the Jr/Sr High School. Some have asked whether or not the event is applicable to elementary school parents, to which I respond, "ABSOLUTELY!"

Regardless of the age of your child, if you have (or are thinking of purchasing one for your child) a smartphone, tablet, computer, or other type of digital distraction in your house, this event will certainly force you to stop and think about the role these devices play in our lives. Throughout the movie, I am 100% confident that some images and stories will remind you of yourself, your child, or someone else you may know and love.

Check out the trailer to see what it's all about and visit bit.ly/wwrsdwellness to RSVP.

This event is open to all members of our school community including students, staff, and parents.

a note from the board president

At our Annual Organizational Meeting on January 3, 2019, I was selected by my peers to be the president of the Board for 2019 along with Joseph Blundo who will serve as the vice-president. On behalf of the entire Board of Education, I would like to say that we are looking forward to a productive year working with the administration to advance the education of all our students in service to the communities of Westwood and the Township of Washington.

Since 2002, the State Board of Education for NJ has approved resolutions in January to honor the work done by the more than 5,000 local school board members. School Board Recognition Month is an important way to thank current and former school board members for dedicating extraordinary amounts of time (without remuneration) and serving as the voice in setting goals on behalf of their communities. To find out more about what the Board of Education does, I encourage you to read through the list below and check out the Board FAQ. Both are very informative resources published by the NJ School Boards Association, the statewide organization that has been supporting local school boards since 1914.

Sincerely,

Susan Swietkowski

13 Things School Board Members Wish People Knew About Them

    1. We are the best trained elected officials in the state
    2. We have to go through a criminal background check before taking office
    3. We have to adhere to a code of ethics
    4. We are legally required to go into executive session when we discuss certain matters
    5. We can't tell you the "real" reason that teacher was non-renewed... or that student got suspended
    6. We're not the person to talk to if you have a problem with your child's teacher.
    7. At school board meetings, the public comment period is for the members of the public to comment, not engage in a discussion with board members.
    8. We don't get keys to the school buildings.
    9. We don't get paid a salary.
    10. We only oversee one employee: the superintendent.
    11. One or two board members can't enact new policies.
    12. We don't decide when school is closed for a snow day.
    13. We take great pride in the most satisfying part of our job: having a lasting impact on the education of the children in our community, and helping every child reach his or her full potential.

Rebecca Duda / Jennifer patterson

George Elementary School

GRADE 5 TEACHERS

Where else can students have the benefit of no less than 42 years combined teaching experience and a depth of knowledge to support all learners. Our dynamic duo, Rebecca Duda and Jennifer Patterson have been a co-teaching pair in the fifth grade at Jessie F. George School for years. Mrs. Rebecca Duda was the classroom teacher, while Mrs. Jennifer Patterson was originally the Resource Room teacher. This pair, evolved naturally as they worked to find ways and resources to reach all students, morphing into this collaborative pair where Mrs. Patterson would push into Mrs. Duda’s class for ‘in class’ support for Math

and Language Arts. This mindful pair was not satisfied with just these core subjects and looked for ways to support students in Science and Social Studies. Their philosophy to make everyone successful was supported by the Westwood School District, in a commitment to make a full co-teaching class.

Where does this dedication come from? Mrs. Patterson began working with handicapped people in a group home as she prepared for her work at the Westwood Regional School District. Mrs. Duda started at Brookside and Ketler, as a fifth and sixth grade teacher, coming together at George school where they began officially co-teaching. This pair has worked diligently with our Co-Teaching Consultants from Montclair State University to develop exemplar strategies for the co-teaching model, often serving as a model for other colleagues to observe and work with. This generous nature extends to their holistic collaborative approach with the students, where their class is “Kindness Certified”. This inclusive philosophy extends to the entire school community where they have invited all students to join them for a movie, such as “Wonder” on a Friday evening. Even their interactive Bulletin Boards, extend to the whole school, promoting respect and kindness.

Not surprisingly, when I asked Mrs. Duda and Mrs. Patterson what they would do if they had not become teachers, there was a long pause, as if to “say’ how absurd. After some wait time, Mrs. Patterson said she would have become a “nurse” and Mrs. Duda would have become an “attorney”, specializing in School Law. Thankfully, for the students and staff, they landed here at George School.

You are cordially invited ...
