JIM THOMAS
High School Math Teacher
Jim Thomas has been a math teacher for Westwood Regional Schools for 14 years and has made contributions to the district in many different areas.
In the classroom Mr. Thomas has worked for several years to help improve the math curriculum and make taking calculus a reality for many students. This year, over 100 students will take one of the three levels of calculus with 57 taking the Advanced Placement Exam. The AP students are looking forward to the arrival of the AP Calculus Boot camp - a rigorous final push for students to prepare them for the AP test in May.
Outside the classroom, Mr. Thomas serves as the advisor for the Continental Math League and Math Team. Students compete with each other and against other schools to prove who is the best. Mr. Thomas' pride and joy is the Academic Decathlon Team. He has coached WACADECA for 10 years and each year has gotten better than the previous one. Over that 10 year span, the team has won over 400 individual awards. For two years in a row, the team has finished 4th in the state and will once again serve as the New Jersey representative in the online national medium-school competition.
Mr. Thomas is originally from Pennsylvania and attended the University of Pittsburgh. He worked on farms all through high school and brings a unique perspective to the district. He lives in Goshen, New York with his wife Ginny who is a school therapist in Mahwah and his twin daughters Isla and Ellie.
