I hope your 2018 has started out on a great note! In case you didn’t know, January was designated as “School Board Recognition Month” in New Jersey. Since the first School Board Recognition Month in New Jersey in 2002, the State Board of Education, the state-level public body that regulates public education, has approved resolutions to honor the work done by local school board members.
School board members in New Jersey receive no pay for their service. More than 5,000 men and women serve on New Jersey’s local boards of education, making them the largest group of elected public officials in the state. Daniel Sinclair, president of the New Jersey School Boards Association, said School Board
Recognition Month is “an important way to thank current and former school board members for their dedication and service on behalf of their communities.”
“New Jersey’s local school boards are selected by their community to serve as their voice in setting goals for their schools,” he said. “School board members serve without remuneration, and dedicate extraordinary amounts of time to their communities. Additionally, board members attend training programs and many reach out to state legislators and members of Congress on behalf of local schoolchildren. We thank them for their work.”
It is an honor for me to serve on our Board of Education and I am looking forward to continuing to serve our school community as we advance the education of all our students.
In January 2018, the Board of Education held two public meetings. On January 10, the Board swore in its newly reelected Board members --Darlene Mandeville, Stephen Kalish, Susan Swietkowski-- and selected the Board President, Susan Swietkowski, and Vice President, Joseph Blundo, for 2018.
At the public meeting on January 18, the meeting featured Student of the Month and Eagle Scout recognitions as well as a presentation of our 2016-2017 District Audit by Robert Haag of Lerch, Vinci, & Higgins, LLP confirming that the district earned an unmodified audit opinion which represents the highest possible rating.
During the meeting, the District's Technology Department also provided an overview of the
State of Technology in WRSD which included a preview of a 1:1 pilot initiative at the High School that is directly from our Strategic Plan Goal #5. We will be providing further updates in future editions of the Cardinal Connection. Click through the presentation below to see more.

The Westwood Regional School District held regular Kindergarten registration from January 15 - 25, 2018. All registrations initiated after that time period are considered "late registrations." The district will make every effort to place students in their “neighborhood” schools; however, due to possible over-enrollment, the district cannot guarantee at which district school—Berkeley, Brookside, George, Washington—your child will be placed. Late registrants especially run the risk of not being placed at the neighborhood school. School placement letters are sent to parents/guardians mid-May.
A child residing in the Borough of Westwood or Township of Washington who will be five (5) years old on or before October 1, 2018 is eligible to enter kindergarten. There are no exceptions to this date. To help facilitate your child’s registration, please follow this process:
If you require further assistance, please send an email to kindergarten.registration@wwrsd.org. We look forward to having your child join us in the Westwood Regional School District!
Over the past 12 months, teachers in the district have worked with the Assistant Superintendent to put WRSD curricula into Atlas, our curriculum mapping software program. The end of the project is nearing and we are pleased to report roughly 320 curricula have been updated during this past year! Not only are our curricula completely up-to-date, they feature blended lessons as well. Part of Goal #5 of the district's strategic plan is to offer new and innovative curricula. Here is the progress we have made so far.
Mrs. Geri Kropiewnicki has been a valued member of the Washington Elementary School community for nineteen years. Throughout her career, Mrs. Kropiewnicki has demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and dedication to her position as an elementary school teacher.
While there are many facets of Mrs. Kropiewnicki’s exceptional teaching repertoire worth recognizing, one trait that stands out is the degree of individual attention, care and personalized instruction that she provides to each and every one of her students. Each marking period, prior to administration of report cards, Mrs. Kropiewnicki meets with each of her students to discuss his or her progress and set goals for the next quarter. While the district has only recently adopted the Balanced Literacy philosophy for language arts instruction, Mrs. Kropiewnicki has been recognized for utilizing thoughtful, differentiated instruction with her students throughout her career, and consistently demonstrates an acute awareness of what each child needs to flourish. Beyond the content curriculum, Mrs. Kropiewnicki fosters critical thinking, self-awareness, mindfulness, and character education within daily classroom activities.
Well before the inception of the “Google” craze, Mrs. Kropiewnicki was enhancing student instruction by integrating technology into her daily lessons. As a result of her enthusiasm and eagerness in this area, she pioneered as one of the first SMART Board users in the building. Over time, her interest and commitment to meaningful technology integration has continued, with her students now using individual Chromebooks
throughout the day to demonstrate mastery of concepts, conduct research, collaborate with one another, complete hands-on projects, and reflect on their learning. Mrs. Kropiewnicki continuously strives to improve her practice by keeping abreast of the latest technology applications and thoughtfully considering how they can be used to complement student learning within her classroom.
Each year at Washington School, Mrs. Kropiewnicki organizes a schoolwide community outreach drive to collect items for children in need. Additionally, she demonstrates her support of Washington School and our Parent School Organization by attending events outside of the school day. Mrs. Kropiewnicki’s steadfast commitment to her students and Washington School is commendable, and we are most fortunate to have her!
At the January 18, 2018 meeting, the Board approved the school calendar for 2018-2019. The calendar is attached for your reference and can be found on the district website, here, along with the NJ Department of Education list of religious holidays permitting student absence from school.
