One remarkable fact about the school is that there are numerous community stakeholders that extends support to all of its plans, programs and activities. I witnessed these events where various local officials, private organizations, parents, and many more rendered some of their services for various school concerns such as preparation for face to face classes, giving necessary supplies like hygiene kits and medicines for the faculty, staff, and students, offering services like scholarship programs and donating of essential equipment to school. This only proves that the school administration was responsible for ensuring the healthy relationship between its people and stakeholders.
However, it isn't always the school that gets support from various group of people, at times, the school also extends their work to the whole community. In my experience being a practice teacher, I was engaged to various programs which benefits the people of some communities.
First of this engagement was the BRIDGE Program of the English Department. BRIDGE Program aims to promote reading literacy skills among children of different communities who struggles from reading, specifically in English language. Teachers go to different communities and teach students. Since my mentor was one of the teachers who has a child to teach, he gave me the opportunity to be a part of the program. He gave me one student to teach reading which I consider a great experience. I had this student handled for several weeks and seeing him improved is really comforting. This actually gave me a good start for my internship journey as this program was offered as I entered the school.
Another community engagement was the community-based retrieval and distribution of modules for various communities. Every teacher in school is a leader for one community, and to my case, I temporarily handled my own community for several weeks. Every learner is visited house to house to deliver and check their modules, collect it and submit to school. For students with difficulty complying their works, they are being assisted. This work helped lessen the expenses of parents in submitting the works of their children and also to assure that their works are being given to their respective teachers.
These opportunities to be socialized not only with the school but with the community is a contribution to my development as a teacher in the making. The experiences of being exposed to different places are a great support to realizing that learner's diversity varies not only to their condition but to their community as well. So it is a must that solutions are not only provided through teaching, but to extending support to their communities.
San Joaquin School of Fisheries is an institution that considers the essential role of its stakeholders in producing quality learners, but not they are not limited to receiving services, rather, gives it back as well. As practice teacher being brought to the reality of the learners' setting, I am lucky to find out other things that may build a better version of me.
In conclusion, community linkages is essential in keeping a healthy relationship between the school and its stakeholders. Everyone is being valued as they are seen responsible in contributing for the growth and development of every learners.
As a volunteer, I have a weekly reading session with Kevin, a young boy coming from a nearby community.
