San Joaquin School of Fisheries being my area of assignment, currently implements two modes of learning: modular and limited face to face. Before being given the authority for actual classroom interaction, it first implemented blended learning where teachers hold online lectures along with modular learning.
As a learning environment, San Joaquin School of Fisheries secure safe and motivating spaces for its students. The provision is observed in the management of modular education. Since in this mode learners get to learn self-paced, they made sure that they deliver learning activity sheets effectively.
As I entered the school for my teaching internship, I was first introduced to the process of module retrieval and distribution. Community leaders, parents, and students with consent go to every classroom where their children are assigned. The process is very convenient because even without the learners coming to school, they are provided with seats in every classroom where they have their nametags on it. In each chair, their modules and kits are placed.
As practice teacher, I knew it was effective because parents are having less time collecting and returning the answer sheets of their children. This means that the school still provides a motivating environment to the students.
For blended learning, teachers used online platforms such as Google Meet and Zoom in holding their classes. I am overwhelmed that these teachers has software skills making them capable of using such platforms for continuous learning. Blended learning isn't a mandatory requirement for the students but only a teacher's strategy to provide more knowledge among the students. As response, there are students who focuses on answering their modules and there are students who were attending online discussion.
However, the school provided more attention on the conduct of limited face to face class. As a preparation, I together with my practice teachers, faculty and staff conducted a clean up drive in the entire school premises partnered with parents, students and local officials of some nearby barangays. Every teacher prepared the classrooms which will will cater 20 students per day.
The desire to provide a healthy learning environment also was evident to the efforts of the teachers in dealing with the current demands of students knowing that we are still on a pandemic. So the faculty and staff provided every classrooms with disinfection kits, alcohols, temperature scanners, and others. The school also made sure that there is enough water supply for the handwashing and toothbrushing of students. Above all, the teachers and staff are oriented on a careful approach with the learners as they might find more time adjusting to the new normal.
With all these efforts of the school administration on providing an effective learning environment to students, I witnessed how many more parents were in desire of coming to school to add the names of their children who will attend face to face class. It was after hearing feedbacks that the school was well-prepared for them making them focus on learning rather than thinking of potential risks they might have while in school.
As part of these efforts, I feel proud because I was able to give assurance that the school is competitive in all levels across different fields. The accomplishment of providing safe spaces for the learners enabled them to gain better results from the performance of the learners compared to how they learn in modular learning. This is also one thing I am thankful of experiencing because as a teacher in the making, I proved that learning happens anytime, anywhere, but the best one happens when designed and made with consideration to the needs of the students.
