Superflex...A Superhero Social Thinking Curriculum, a curriculum that I often use with children, is written by Michelle Garcia Winner and Stephanie Madrigal. Superflex is a superhero whose superpowers are super flexible thinking and the ability to think about others. The villains in this curriculum are called the Team of Unthinkables and these characters attempt to invade people's brains in order to get them to do things that show they are not thinking about others. The first story in this series is entitled, Superflex takes on Rock Brain and the Team of Unthinkables, as is pictured below:
I typically use this book first to introduce the characters. In this book, Superflex takes on Rock Brain, who is a member of the Team of Unthinkables. Rock Brain makes people get stuck on their own ideas, making them only want to do what they want to do. I use this book as an introduction into the world of Superflex. I have found over the years that students really enjoy learning about Superflex and the Team of Unthinkables since these characters are fun, interesting, and sometimes funny! I have also found that students are more likely to admit that certain characters get into their brains when presenting problems in this manner. By making these difficulties of flexible thinking into characters, children feel more comfortable talking about how these characters get into their brains and how to get these characters out of their brains without feeling like they are bad children. It also allows adults and children to be on the same side of the fight (e.g. "Oh no, it looks like Rock Brain snuck back into your brain! Let's figure out how to get him back out again!"). The entire Team of Unthinkables can be seen below:
The most common Unthinkables that invade children's brains are the following:
Rock Brain -
I make people get stuck on their ideas.
Glassman -
I make people have huge upset reactions.
Brain Eater -
I distract people.
D.O.F. (Destroyer of Fun) -
I make people overly competitive.
WasFunnyOnce -
I get people to use humor at the wrong time, the wrong place, or with the wrong person.
Worry Wall -
I make people worry too much.
Energy Hare-y -
I give people too much energy.
Space Invader -
I get people to invade others' personal space.
Over the years, students have also created their own Unthinkables in my setting. Some of these characters are pictured below:
Not Me Nat -
I make people say, "Not me!" when it really was them.
Chatty Cathy -
I make people talk a lot when they should be quiet.
Pessimistic Pete -
I make people think or say pessimistic or negative things.
Perfect Man -
I make people think they have to be perfect.
Sidekick Bob -
I make people angry when they don't feel perfect.
Put Down Pat -
I make people say mean things about themselves.
Tattle Ted-
I make people tattle on other people.
